I personally do not believe this distinction is accurate - I beleive hunger is hunger whether your body needs nutrition or not. However, and this is an important however, I do believe this concept is a useful tool when fighting hunger. When you know for a fact that your body does not need additional nutrition and you're still hungry, lying to yourself and telling yourself that this is not 'real' hunger but 'fake' hunger, can be helpful. i.e. You tell yourself "I know this is fake hunger so I'm going to go distract myself from thinking about food by engaging in an activity (walking, etc.) where food is not the focus. By distracting yourself, you hopefully engage in a win-win. You win first by not consuming calories your body doesn't need and you win also by engaging in an alternative behavior that is heathier.
So even though I don't buy the whole 'two kinds of hunger' thing - it is a myth that is also a very useful construct for GBS patients. I use it and I encouraging other to use it as well. Sometimes a lie is far more useful and convenient than the truth.
I hope this passes for you.
I believe there is a "head" hunger for me, but I think it's because I would use food as a consoler. I would eat, munch, and graze when I wasn't hungry. I'm trying to stop the cycle of quitting one bad habit for another one as I did when I quit smoking nearly 15 years ago!
Keep in mind that the 64 oz's of fluid are reccommended for a normal size human being. Most of us start out twice as big as normal and really should be drinking 4 ltrs of water a day minimum.
