Gastric Bypass Surgery Support Group
Gastric bypass (GBP) is any of a group of similar operative procedures used to treat morbid obesity, a condition which arises from severe accumulation of excess weight in the form of fatty tissue, and the health problems ("co-morbidities") which result. If you are considering gastric bypass or have had it, join the community where we share our experiences and find support.
You have folks that just go along, hoping they are doing ok, pretty much counting on the surgery to control their eating, trying sugars and finding that they do or do not dump, exercising when they can...
At the other end of the spectrum is the person who tries to control every part of the process.
My experience is that both tend to crash and burn after a while. If they are lucky, with support, and perhaps psychological and spiritual help (for me OA. a 12 Step program) you learn the value of balance and moderation.

I do not want to live in a world where food tastes bad or I don't enjoy eating.. I think that food is a sense based experience and since bypass its become even more important to me that things taste good. I was and still am pretty into cooking and eating well.
I have said this before on this board, but I want to get to a place in my head and heart where I am able to cut food down to right size.. meaning that I am not using it as a best friend, a partner or destroyer, but just food to be enjoyed and as nourishment for my physical self. I want for life to be life and food to be food. I work on this all the time with my shrink.
In terms of how do you know if its working... well the research suggests that people that keep food logs and weigh and measure their food have significantly higher rates of success at long term maintenance.
But in the near term, weight loss is a pretty simple equation (calories in) minus (exercise or calories expended) = loss. So if you are burning more than your eating you'll continue to loose.
I hope this is useful in some way.

So everyone has their own system that works for them. Being aware of your concerns and what you are eating is the first step in staying within the program.
Not counting calories or fat is not a big deal right now because you are not eating enough, but it could possibly be as you expand your diet. So just being aware of that is a huge first step.
Good luck :)
I think my repulsion to recording my diet comes from my childhood. i remember the first diet i did was when i was 6. it was a beet diet my mom was on and i went on it with her! needless to say by dinner i was cheating - i hate beets!
I've always been on and off diets and i hate constantly thinking about eating. i just want to be able to eat for nourishment and be done with it.
oh well...
I agree with WertSleeve you must have balance, but I also know by watching my sister and mom who are both 2 1/2 years out that if you are not careful you can gain a little bit or even plateau for long period of times.
I also had a suggestion from my nutrionalist to begin journaling to see what my habits are. I found out I wasn't getting in enough protein and water in like I should. As you know this can be very harmful to our bodies.
So, I am going to begin journaling for the next month to see if I can improve on my habits. I know I could just drink protien shakes, but what kind of life is that?
I need to learn to eat properly and learn that food isn't a bad thing, it is needed and can be enjoyed if done right.
Otherwise, we can go over board in any direction.Too much or too litlle isn't really good for us.
I was given a really good hint how to not eat too fast too. My class leader suggested to get a egg timer and set it. This is something I have been battling for many years due to working in the food industry for 20 years.
I hope you are able to do well on your program and take care of yourself.

5 months out over 100 pounds down and 160 to go.
I get so hungry between meals I eat too fast and may end up paying for it. Maybe I can try the timer to stretch my meal.
Thanks everyone.
3 main meals and 2-3 snacks inbetween, every 3 hours or so.
Each doctor is different ,but I know this has helped me in trying to get the protein and water and other foods in that I am suppose to be doing.
It also helped my sister to get off her plateau also. It keeps her protein levels higher then before.
Hope this helps.

Salads are awesome right now, but the thought of a bite of chicken or turkey or a meatball again makes me nauseated.
3 mos out RNY. Down 52 lbs. So I must be doing something right. I am seriously concerned for the future.
