Have any of you had issues with hair loss? I'm curious if your doctors have made any recommendations to prevent your hair from falling out. My doctor says that there is nothing that can be done to prevent hair loss. I've heard that sufficient protein and water prevent hair loss. Any suggestions? I don't want to be baldylocks!!

I am 3 1/2 months out and have been losing handfuls of hair constantly. I have been taking biotin pills everyday with my vitamin, they are totally safe and small enough to swallow. they also have biotin shampoo at beauty supply stores. biotin is great for hair, skin and nails. i have noticed a big difference with my skin and nails but i think the hair will take longer. everyone i have talked to has lost hair and all say it will grow back. sometimes thicker than before..I hope that helps you..Good Luck!

I used to lose hair alot. I have been using Nioxon shampoo and rinse. I has sorta a minty scent. It is great shampoo also for hair. I am almost 3 weeks post op of my bypass and my team tells me to take all my vitamins etc. but Zinc and Iron are was help hair loss. I have few friends that are 2 years almost post op and they did not lose any hair. I know everyone is different and asks your doctor about all your vitamins I know I have to take calcium and vit D , b12, iron, zinc, multi vit etc. I will have to personally let you know after I am longer on my post op. Good luck.

I started loosing hair at 4 months out. I am eight months now and it has slowed down a great deal. Protein is very important to keep it up over 60grams and some people take niacin too.

There is also Nioxim shampoo, which helps you keep the hair you have. I've been told you can find it in the WalMarts in the larger cities. Or you can find it at a lot of the beauty salons. If they don't have it, ask them if they can order you some.

BTW, I didn't start losing my hair until I was a year post-op. I have a lot of thick hair, so I could afford to lose it. My only complaint is my hair is coming back at different rates and it is curly and out of control. It has taken me another year to not have a bad hair day every day. But I'd still have the surgery again!

unfortunaly, there is nothing i found that stopped the hair loss. it started for me around 4 months. it has come to a stop for me and lasted about two months. don't waste your money on all of those products that promise you not to lose your hair. your doc is right. its just part of the side effects. don't worry, you will get over it. if i did you can. i had long beautiful hair and then it started to fall out. one day i just had enough and cut it off. i love my new short hair. it is so much easier to deal with and very stylish. don't worry, you wont go bald like you think.

I never had an issue with hair loss until a month ago. I've been slacking on my protein intake, so I thought that might be the reason why. I'm still working on the protein issue, so no changes with hair growth.

My hair started to fall out about 3 mos after surgery even though I was eating the rcmnd amt of protien. I used gnc whey protien powder (unflavored) and drank 2 8oz servings a day. The hair loss stopped within 1 week!

My surgeon said to take selenium and zinc supplements if I experienced hair loss. I followed his advice and it worked for me!

Thanks for all your suggestions! I'm going to try the zinc. i had forgotten about that. I'd had a zinc difficiency a few years ago and I started lossing a lot of hair. I haven't started lossing any hair yet, but I hope to avoid it if I can!

Yes Zinc is great but Nioxon Shampoo is not a gimick product as some have suggested. I am a redhead with thin but curly hair and when I use it with a proper diet my husband does have all that hair in the drain. It nourishes your hair plus is a great shampoo. You can buy at any beauty supply place it may be a bit more expensive for the larger size but lasts a longgggg time. You only need a small amount to wash and small amount rubbed into hands then put on your hair for the rinse. It used to be like we had an Irish Setter lol and now it is much better. keep up with your proteins and what your doctor states . ok that is my two cents on that lol.

hi, my surgeon told me that hair loss has nothing to do with the surgery, but how your body reacts to the drugs your being put under with. and it starts about 4 months after surgery for thise it is going to affect. if you have any kind of surgery they tell you there may be a chance of some side effects of the drugs they put you out with. but it comes back

Wow! That is a crock of...you know what. Think about it, you are technically starving your body from the way you used to eat. All the nutrients are going to go to your internal major organs and could care less about your skin and hair. That is why you start to lose your hair. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with drugs. LOL

BTW, I have had gall bladder removal, cesarian section, hernia repair, and ankle surgery and never had noticeable hair loss....I rest my hair...er my case. ;-)
