There are lots of people who found this out about themselves while going through all the testing for WLS. My surgeon said it is really common and I was treated for it with antibiotics after my surgery. I had an endoscopy and coloscopy prior to surgery however it was not mentioned in my test results from the endoscopy. Just glad my surgeon caught it and was able to treat it. Don't let this stress you too much - its just another step towards the new you.

It is a bacteria that can live in your stomach. Like silky said it is commn and easily treatable with antibiotics.

My daughter was treated for it a couple of years ago when she began losing alot of weight. As I recall, we all have some of it in our stomachs and there is debate in the medical community about whether it is good or bad. It is believed to be the cause of many ulcers. Hers was treated over about a three month period with antibiotics and pepto-bismol.

It's pretty common in third world countries.

H Pylori is a bacteria that can cause ulcers. Not everyone who has H Pylori will have symptoms, however, it is best to get rid of the H Pylori before GBS. It is easily treated. No worries!!

Ditto to what everyone said. Don't worry, H Pylori is one of those stomach bacteria that must be kept in check so it doesn't go off and cause any trouble. The fact that you didn't even know you had it means its just there and they need to give you antibiotics. Surgeons routinely test for that before GBS so they can treat it. All is well. KD

I am so sorry for going from such a high place earlier this morning to feeling so discouraged - i am beyond frustrated and its not a good place right now that i am in. I feel like this could have been avoided. I updated phone numbers months ago when i started this journey and i find out today that had two of my numbers wrong and no one ever called my house the one number they had right. I wish the tears would stop but i am so hurt right now its all i can do to release this anger. I have to repeat my blood work again to see where my levels are at. b1, vitamin d and iron and do the stool culture tomorrow. If they have not improved i have to do antibiotics for two weeks after than an endoscopy of my stomach and biopsy or another stool culture that could take 2 - 4 weeks to come back. I feel like I woke up in the middle of a nightmare and i am questioning my decision all over again.

So i've gone from possibly having my surgery mid march to sometime in april. I am floored!!!

Take a deep breath my dear friend. I know it sucks to have a set back... But it is what it is now, and you can only roll with it. Find you a nice meditation cd, kick back, breath deep, let the healing stuff in and the stress out....

And please know i get that its easier said than done... But you know the prayer i'm sure...

I too have the bacteria and had no clue... And found out from PCP
not from surgeons office... Was kind of weird. However i am still months out from surgery, so no time setback for me.

I had it 2x. the first time took 6 mths 3 hospital stays for dehydration then finally an endoscope with biopsy found it. most people it shows in blood or shoot spit maybe cant remember now. It is a bacteria my docs said that actually we have already but something they didnt know what then not sure if now is different but it can run amuk. it can be nasty causing cancer or ulsers.........I couldnt take what is referd to the prev pack (previced, biaxin, maybe tetracycline) anyway they gave me these antibiotics and the previced and pepto (i cant take pepto anymore lol) I did this 14 days. My symptoms went away. the second bout they gave me two rounds of treatment to get rid of every last symptome . You will be feeling so good when you get it treated. if you dont think you have symptoms or think you are having symptoms from bypass you may find it wasnt the case.

I am so very sorry for yet another set back... but reality is you want to go into this surgery as healthy as possible.. the timing is everything.. its on God's time frame.... Patience is defintely a virtue I have little of..lol... but i do believe everything happens for a reason.. including the road blocks... I would be focusing on making sure that EVERYONE involved has your correct phone number.. I too have gone thru that and that can be so very fruistrating... adding to your disappointment... You take care of you... and all will work out for the best :)

I appreciate the feedback - i've talked to people who have had h pylori it is not my biggest concern (a concern yes) of course i want to be as healthy as possible for surgery that goes without saying.

The bottom line here is the test came back in January, had I gotten a phone call this could have been corrected in February with the last of my pre-op requirements. I have had the same work number for 21 years and i've been a patient of Montefiore medical group for 30 years. The work number on file is no where near my work # and the person who entered my cell phone number transposed one of the numbers (no biggie it happens, I've done it.).

My question is had this been a cancer patient or they discovered a patient had cancer - would they really let it go if a patient had NOT called back. I THINK NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I understand the whole serenity prayer thing trust me i recite it daily, but I have been at this for 6 MONTHS and i'm right here - countdown to my date and now i have to go potentially another 30 days. You are absolutely right it is easier said than done to calm down because the way this was handled makes no logical sense to me. H Pylori i can deal with that set back just like I did my heart - but the bottom line remains this could have been resolved in February.

i had this once and my doc gave me antibiotics and pepto bismol...something in the pepto helps kill the bacteria

its the bismal that works its majic pepto yek aviode that route if your able to do the preve pack.

im sorry they didnt contact you. they could of sent you a letter when they got no results from the calls.......howeverif they put the wrong numbers down for you they could try till they are blue in the face and youd still be here just finding out. people need to get back to paper, pens and the us postal system. so get on them for me it was a 2 week protocol except the second infection took two rounds.

I'm so sorry, you are surely being put through the ringer to get to the operating room. There is NO excuse for them no following up with "a message" like that that you did not respond to. Had that been something fatal it could have been a real tragedy that no one followed up. Praying they can get your stomach straight soon so you can get a date.
