Gastric Bypass Surgery Support Group
Gastric bypass (GBP) is any of a group of similar operative procedures used to treat morbid obesity, a condition which arises from severe accumulation of excess weight in the form of fatty tissue, and the health problems ("co-morbidities") which result. Great group last night. A nutritionist (the one I have seen) came and we talked about eating out, eating in general and we shared info and tips. I have heard it all before but it is good to hear it again because its easy to become complacent and slack off the habits that must become life long. Here's a few things you likely know but I'll repeat because they resonated with me. Disclaimer-- This is what my NUT says, I understand yours may say something different so I am only sharing info, not debating.
- Based on the patients she sees, the ones that regain weight have done two things- started drinking with meals and eating bread without counting portion or carbs. We all have heard others say, "I don't think I can not drink with my meal". To be successful this is a life long habit to follow.
- As GBS patients, our bodies crave water, honor your body and drink water as your primary beverage.
- After we are able to get in our protein through food, rather than shakes, it is better to eat protein, not drink. Of course drinking protein is better than not getting it in at all (traveling, not feeling well etc.)
- Going out to eat too early after surgery is just too risky. Eat at home, get into a mealtime routine of chewing 30 times, putting your fork down between bites, eating mindfully. After you have mastered these habits, you can go out but continue the habits.
- Peruse menus on line and have a plan. Ask questions of the waitstaff. Don't assume you know what is in a food or how it is prepared.
- This I hadn't heard before or forgot- Plan your meals for two carb servings a day (no more) of 15-20 grams each. Need carbs for brain health etc.
The best thing is always hearing others ideas, experiences etc. Nothing beats the support of others who have shared the journey.
