so the other day we were at McD's and i ordered my kids white milk. My daughter has really picked up on reading the nutrition labels (wow, i didn't know i was so OCD about it - she's only 6!)
she turned to me and said Mommy, milk has 12 sugars. I told her she was reading the label wrong and to give it here. But she was right! so i thought McDs was adding sugar to their milk!
I came home in a huff and pulled the gallon of milk out of the fridge and it said a cup of milk had 12 sugars!!! What?
so i googled it. how stupid do i feel, Lactose is a form of sugar!
from the info i found it's consider a natural sugar, like fructose is fruit sugar. on diabetes forums and sites, they say not to worry about it like refined sugar, but that you should be aware it can effect your blood sugar levels.
i remember my nut said that after surgery we can have cereal and milk because it's like drinking with a meal, but really it can double the sugar content! Plus it's liquid so it goes right through us.
anyways, given that my mom and sis were also surprise by the sugar content i figured i might not be that stupid and others may not realize. i have read the label on my milk carton many many times - but only looked at the protein, never even dawned on me to look at sugar.
so now you know!

Any chemical that ends in "ose" (lactose, sucrose, fructose, dextrose, sucralose) is a form of sugar. So always be sure to read ingredient labels.
The thing that bugs me is when products proclaim that they have no trans fat and then hydrogenated oil is in the ingredients. The law says that if they contain less than half a gram of trans fat per serving then they can call it zero. So annoying!
When I was on insulin for diabetes, milk was one of the things I was told to drink if my sugar dropped. Milk would raise my levels back up and quickly.

There has been talk about adding aspartame (sugar substitute) to Skim Milk, so just curious if there isn't any sugar in Skim Milk? You might need to look into that...Best Wishes
