You arent alone... Many of us have met the same resistance. My parents were my brick wall. My husband immediately got online and started doing his OWN research and was able to see what i did, but my parents i finally had to tell them that it was a choice made between me and my surgeon and if it wasnt a good one, the insurance company wouldnt have agreed to foot the bill. Now that i'm almost four months post op, and i've lost about 65 pounds, (183 pounds now!!!) they dont ever try to tell me it was a bad choice. Weight watchers may have worked for my parents to their liking, but everyone is different, and thats why i did what i needed to. hang in there, they too shall see the light you see at the end of your tunnel and if not, its your body, your decision, you're future! (disclaimer, if its your husband thats struggling so much get him to the doctor with you, the nutritionist, the support groups and make him open his eyes at least so he understands)

thank you suzie thats helps alot! It my family think(mom) if i work hard enought i can get the work off surgery is not needed. My mom will see how great I will look in 3 more months (i get my surgery) and then she might understand.

Unfortunately, overweight people are seen as lazy with no willpower. I remember telling people at work I was having the surgery, and most would say, "why don't you just stop eating so much and work out?" Really? If it was that easy, don't you think I would be doing that? I could lose some weight by starving myself, but when it came to trying to eat "normal" again, the weight would pile back on and then some! It was hard to exercise because my back hurt, so I became more sedentary. A vicious cycle. I now have a new normal and a wonderful tool to help me get where I need to be. Yes, this was a drastic way to do it, but I inherited the "fat" gene and needed help. Good luck to you - only you know what is right for you!

Most of the people tell me I dont need the surgery since I have already lost so much weight (60lbs). I try to explain that I need to actually keep it off this time and the surgery is a great tool to help me with that. I have already been warned that if I dont take the weight off, my spine could collapse in as little as 10 years, (that was 2 years ago).

Yesterday when I was at the hospital for my EGD, the guy who took out my IV and discharged me said, you dont look like someone who needs bariatric surgery. Ummm thanks buddy, but unless you know my history and health issues, done assume that just because I am not "huge" that I cant benefit from the results.

wow, do I know what you all are talking about! I have been on diets since I was 11 years of age. up,down, up, down. Diet after diet, with pills without pills different plans. My own were the worst, starvation. In any case. I have been told I don't look like I need it either. But what is funny is people that know me don't even see I've lost 60 pounds, now how observant is that?

Same here folks! I lost 50lbs on my own and I got so many people saying "well if you lost 50, why can't you just lose the rest?". Oh I can lose it, but Lord knows I won't keep it off. My husband was my only real supporter. But like so many others I knew this was the right choice for me. I needed to repair the damage I had done to my body by over stretching my stomach. I am 16 days post op and down a total of 74 lbs (pre and post op) and I love it.

I too struggled most of my life with dieting, only to gain back twice as much when trying to maintain. I was fooling myself when I didn't see myself as obese. Health problems made me face up to the fact that I needed surgery if I wanted to be around for my 13 yr old son. My family certainly didn't understand, but are now starting to come around. This is definitely not the easy way to lose weight, but hopefully it will be well worth it. I'm looking forward to a great future.
