Gastric Bypass Surgery Support Group
Gastric bypass (GBP) is any of a group of similar operative procedures used to treat morbid obesity, a condition which arises from severe accumulation of excess weight in the form of fatty tissue, and the health problems ("co-morbidities") which result. If you are considering gastric bypass or have had it, join the community where we share our experiences and find support.

i was just scheduled for RNY surgery in six weeks. I am embarrassed to tell friends or co-workers that I am having gastric bypass surgery cause I can't lose the weight myself. Has anyone else addressed this issue?

I only told people I trusted. Which was mostly everyone except my side of the family. I told them three months post op. I had done all my research so if anyone voiced questions or concerns I was ready. I only told people I thought would support me. I had done enough research, I did not want to hear negative fearful projections. I surrounded myself with positive and supportive people who were willing to be educated about the process. The more you know, the more prepared you will be to respond intelligently to others.

A lot of negativity from others comes from ignorance. They simply don't know exactly what a gastric bypass is, what you had to do to get to this point and how much it'll take from you afterwards. People who claim it is an easy way out, just don't have the right information. So as Lcat4 said: educate yourself and be prepared to explain (patiently) to others what the surgery is and what it requires of you. If they insist on being negative then perhaps those people are not the right people to have in your life. You want to move forward, if others don't want you to move forward, they do not deserve a spot in your new life. You are growing as a person and creating a new future for yourself. They can choose to be a part of it, or not.

You don't have to tell anyone your plans. All they need to know is you're having surgery. If they ask what for simply say, "Why do you ask" then change the subject. I only told my closest friends my plans. No one else needs to know.

I had to start going to a therapist prior to my surgery and she gave me some advise and I loved her for it, only tell people you want to tell and you know will support you. There are people in my family I haven't told/seen because i don't want any negativity. I feel like this process was a difficult one and I wanted as much positive feed back as i could get. The people Ive told have been so supportive and i choose them because when i need some love i can turn to them and I know that i will get the support i need. Good luck and congrats on your new you!

Thank you guys so much for the ideas and information. I was worried about what to tell some people in my life, too. I really like judykay's "Why do you ask" response!
