I am thinking seriously of having a wls as i recently broke an ankle and my gym activities are limited hence the weight in pillling on even more. Have tried loads of diets didnt work.

Does anyone konw which is a better option Gastric sleeve vs gastric bypass. My consutant has advised that Gastric sleeve has been perfected in the last 6 years as the stomach size is now much smaller hence less chances of expansion and at the same time there are no other internal switches/ changes to be done like in the bypass. I am sure there are loads of you who have done the homework previosuly and would be grateful if you can share your thougfhts on this.

Personally I wanted the gastric sleeve because it did leave the "plumbing" in tact, just made the stomach smaller. However, my insurance would not cover that procedure yet, so I opted for bypass instead. I wanted whatever was going to give me the best chance at permanent results. From what I have read and what I was presented with at the WLS info session I attended, the sleeve and bypass statistically have about the same results long-term. Definitely do your homework, though, to make sure and ask your surgeon lots of questions! Good luck to you!!

Both procedures have advantages and disadvantages. Which one is a better option depends on the person and your circumstances. I chose GBS because I wanted the advantage of restriction and malabsorption (the sleeve restricts but does not have malabsorption). I was willing to take supplements for the rest of my life. I also hoped that I would have the dumping syndrome that frequently comes with GBS (yeah, I do!!) Some people prefer not to have malabsorption, so the sleeve may be a better choice for them.

I was looking for the most powerful tool possible. If I failed at this, I didnt want to be able to blame my procedure choice, saying to myself, I wish Id had ____, then it would have worked.

do your homework.. I went with GBS just for the fact that I had failed at so many things, I wanted the added bonus that came with it.. I am 11months out.. and its been marvelous..

Call you insurance company and inquire which procedures they cover. Mine only covers the sleeve if your BMI is 50+. They do cover the bypass and band.
