I'm only guessing but, I'll bet those are calcium carbonate anyway.

GBS patients should only be using calcium citrate. After surgery, the portion of the stomach that produces the most stomach acid needed to digest calcium carbonate is cut away.

Calcium citrate does not require as much acid to digest, and there fore are the suggested choice of calcium for us.

Another suggestion is to use something similar the caltrate-D. this pairs the calcium citrate with vitamin D to help them both get metabolized better.

Don't take Iron with your calcium!! They cross eachother out!

actually, they have citrical chews that are calcium citrate. i just mentioned them in a video i did earlier today.

i was under the impression that caltrate was calcium carbonate? i picked up some chewable caltrate and had to take it back because it wasn't citrate.

I use chewable Calcium Citrate that I order on line from www.bariatricadvantage.com It comes in different chewable flavors. I also use the chocolate chewable calcium Viactiv with vitamins D & K.

Citrical chewables work best for me, I like the caramel flavored over the chocolate flavored. They are easily digested and taste pretty good too. I have never had to take so many pills and vitamins in my life but the chewables aren't hard work at all! Just my 2 cents...

I think the citracal chews come in lemon too?? Lemon, Chocolate, and Caramel-- if I remember correctly-- I prefer the lemon the most.. the caramel is just a little too much for me :) Unfortunately the local Commissary only carries the chocolate ones, so Chocolate I go!

My step father who had the surgery in March uses Tums w/ calcium that his doctor recommended. Has anyone else heard of this?

Tums from my understanding is Calcium Carbonate which is not easily absorbed into the GBS patient's system.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I think I will have to stick with Citracal Calcium Citrate + Vit D creamy chews that I have since they are the ones that the Dr. says to take. It is just hard to get over that it is like eating a chewy chocolate candy and I was never a candy sweet person.

I do agree about having to take so many vitamins after the surgery. I went from 1 med pill to 7 or 9 pills altogether. WOW!

caltrate-D, it is easy to digest Calcium Citrate. I get the smaller pills and take two a day, that was recommended to me. The chews are carbonate which will make you feel ill and they are hard to digest.
