Hmm. I was told if I had the bypass I wouldn't ever be allowed to take NSAIDS again, too great a risk of ulcers, and with the shortened gut, there are risks to your organs, I don't remember if it was liver or the kidneys.
That's why I had the sleeve done. Down the road, it gives me the option of NSAIDS if I have to for my knees and back.
My WLS follow up doctor gave me a script for tramadol if I needed it for pain, but I haven't needed it yet. Thankfully I haven't thrown out my back or gotten a migraine since getting the script.

thanks mnmama, I didn't have a choice, I had to go the bypass route because of gerd, had to remove the stomach to stop producing the acid. I know the risks of ulcers, but I wonder if it is a better risk to take then to be in such pain and not be able to walk or raise my arm up. I have tried having a massage every other week even to keep the muscles from getting so tight, I take muscle relaxers at bedtime and I try to excercise more to try and eleviate the pain but nothing works. I am going to try and go every other day with the meds and hope the doc can come up with a solution. I was just hoping there were other patients who have been down this road to give me some advice.

Tough spot. What other pain meds can your doctor offer you? Are there topical patches that work for fibromyalgia? Do Tens units help? Hope your medical team can come up with some options for you. Take care.

I have Rhumatoid arthritis, I only take NSAIDS when I can not tolerate the pain. These are so hard on our stomach and our kidneys. I do take Motrin on very rare days. When I do, I take it with a carafate (RX) it helps coat my stomach. Pain wise I take nucenta, Percocet, or Vicodin. I do try other things. Warmth helps my joints. So I make rice socks. It helps more than pain meds. You put dry rice (the type you boil not minute rice) in a large tube sock (I put mine in a pillow case) heat in microwave for five to eight minutes. I use four, I put one by my feet, one on my knees, one on my hips and then keep one for my hands. I just move them around to what hurts. I'm not sure if this will help you but it does wonders for me. Try with one see if it helps.

Prior to surgery, I could not imagine life without some kind of drug for my arthritis. Two days after getting home from the hospital I RAN to my Primary Care Physician to get a script for Tramadol. It did help me out alot. I had the sleeve, but I understand that RNY patients can take it as well. I have lost a considerable amount of weight and my osteoarthritis pain has basically disappeared, so I am no longer taking the meds. Not sure if this one will work for you, but it did for me when I still needed something. I think tramadol is also called ultram

I have been going the "natural approach" to deal with inflammation. I take Boswellia and Tumeric-curcumin. It seems to help.
