Its pretty much a hole or abcess in your anal region. My mother in law had a Vaginal Fistula all they do is go in and drain it if need be and sew it up. A lot of Women can get these in 3rd world countries from poor birthing practices....Thats all I got....lol...Best Wishes

You are right tlc, however when they keep reoccurring, they actually put you in the hospital, open up the channel that runs between the rectum and the location of the boil so they can remove the core (for lack of better way to describe it), close it up correctly so there is no channel left to prevent it from coming back....

It is NOT a pretty procedure!

I always think of it this way... when we break a leg, they put a cast on you and you don't use the leg till its healed... but with this, they cut open your butt (sorry!) and then expect you to use it (poop) while it trys to heal!

So, you can see why one would be apprehensive to have this done. LOL!!

I had a fistulotomy done a year and a half ago. Wasn't at all as bad as I had envisioned. I did a bowel prep like for my colonoscopy, though the doctor didn't require it. I wanted to make sure I wouldn't have to go right away! I didn't even have to take anything stronger than tylenol for pain. My doctor gave me some lidocaine ointment to use as needed and suggested using "bag balm" in the green square container to prevent irritation. I didn't even miss any work with it.

So, I asked my hubby again what his mom had said about her fistula. He did the same thing Sweden did, aparently saying that would be worse than a prostate exam ROFLOL. He hears all of it, his mother is a nurse so we get all the gory details (usually). He says for guys I guess its extreamly uncomfortable to talk about, which I really don't get cause he has a ton of poop jokes :D. All he says is better out than in...I hope its like truetoyou says and not to bad if you need it done...Best Wishes

I think its a guy thing... ok to tell jokes about such things, but talk serious, heck no! I know mine gets all weird about such things, but will tell the most descriptive and at times, vulgar jokes... And they say we are hard to understand! LOL!

I had a doc want to do this to me last fall, but I put it off cause we were getting ready to move.... Now, here we are again. Will know more after doc visit tomorrow....

Funny the things I can share here and no where else! LOL!

I had a peri rectal abscess 2 years before the fistulotomy and that was so much worse.Once they drained it they packed it to let it heal from the inside out. I was in so much more pain with that than the fistula. I think I would have been mortified going through the abscess drainage if I wasn't so miserable and I wasn't a nurse myself! Then lucky me to develop a fistula later and get to bare by bottom once again!

I asked the surgeon what the chance of it coming back was and he said "if I did my job right...none". So far so good!

Yes after kids I had that. Plug your eyes....Hemmorroid, fissures and fistula so I had analplasty...or a brand new ass as I like to call it. Just sit in the tub after going to the bathroom for a couple weeks.
