Has anyone out there struggled with alcohol use after gastric bypass?
jchumley
I have not. However, I have been warned extensively by my GB team to avoid alcohol due to the high risk of becoming an alcoholic after GB surgery. The surgery causes a very small amount of alcohol to lead to intoxication, which can lead to abuse and alcoholism. I have made the choice that for the rest of my life it will be non alcoholic beer if I want to drink, but most likely just iced tea for me from here on. If you are experience problems with alcohol I recommend highly that you seek help immediately through a therapist and your family doctor. I hope that it all works out for you.

It is a common transfer addiction from food. People who never drank much before have found themselves turning into alcoholics. Totally full of carbohydrates that substitute for what we don't get in high carb foods. And just like food, it can be used to numb feelings. If you are experiencing this, it is not too late to make changes and get help. It isn't easy but if you want to keep your health, please seek help. It is extremely important to watch your blood liver numbers and be really careful of stomach ulcers. We are more susceptible to the toxic effects because of our altered anatomy. Once again, the choice becomes life or decline which is why we had surgery in the first place. One day at a time. One choice at a time.

Thanks guys for responding. I am five yrs post op and have maintained my goal weight up until the last six months. I took on a job that emotionally and physically depleted me. I started out having a couple glasses of wine after work, but things very quickly became out of control. I've put on ten pounds and struggling to get back in control. I isolated myself with my shame and depression. If anyone has experienced this problem and prevailed, it would be a privilege to have a conversation. Thanks again

Hi, I am just over 7 years post op, and 2.5 years ago I ended up in treatment. I never thought I would end up in that situation, scared the hell out of me! The worst side affect of the surgery, take it seriously, and spread the warning..... It is still a daily struggle for me and would love to chat to anyone worried or experiencing struggles or fears! Best of luck!

I basically was not a drinker, had my surgery 9 yrs ago. I didn't drink anything for a few years after my surgery, as it was hard to eat/drink. But once I did have a drink with alcohol especially, it hit me quick...on the first drink. I must admit I enjoy the feeling, gives me a lot of energy. I try to limit having a drink to once or twice a week. Didn't realize it was a side affect of the surgery.

Yes, I find whiskey and water has no carb and it does create a buzz factor... Not so good for weight. It really hits you hard so one good drink and that is about it... but then the switch can be triggered and you get another one and another one. I am up about 8 pounds and just gave away my half drank whiskey bottle. It is too easy to get tangled up into this mess... I am still working on my relationship with food and feelings I don't need another thing to come in to numb me. I did not start drinking until a year out and have a drink on the weekends. Not fun having hangovers at 51... what did I miss something in my twenties? nope that girl is gone... I like being inside my body now. Learning how each day...

I’m 7 years post bypass and never used to drink. But it’s becoming more of a norm for me and scared me tbh. I find it easier to drink than eat because I don’t get full, which is obviously not a good thing if wine. Would love to chat further to others in a similar situation as I’m not even 30 yet, so have the rest of my life ahead of me!
