Gastric Bypass Surgery Support Group
Gastric bypass (GBP) is any of a group of similar operative procedures used to treat morbid obesity, a condition which arises from severe accumulation of excess weight in the form of fatty tissue, and the health problems ("co-morbidities") which result. If you are considering gastric bypass or have had it, join the community where we share our experiences and find support.
There are a few schools of thought here. I am a recovering alcoholic and food addict, so you can guess my view point! lol...
Thank you very much for responding so quickly though!
No alcohol until you've reached your goal weight and completed recovery from any other further surgery such as plastic... And then if you do drink -- No more than 1/2 of a drink only on very, very special occasions. The reason? A problem with food can easily become a problem with alcohol. Also alcohol now hits you like a ton of bricks. If you used to have several drinks and "be fine," now you're a complete lush after 1 drink. Furthermore, alcohol dehydrates you, can make you act in ways you wouldn't normally... It's just like a four-year-old playing with fire. I would never suggest anyone do anything to send them off plan. I see you live in California, what's the take on marijuana use after wls? I can't guess it's good for you at all, but what would a doctor say? Be cautious. Don't do anything to destroy the life you're making for yourself... Enough said from the soapbox...

I would love to know that someday I can have a little Merlot wine after surgery and not hurt myself.
I guess we are doing such a big thing to our bodies that we have to be careful
I'll be 8 months out on the 29th. I am still struggling with foods however can drink. Not alot certainly but enough to cop a nice buzz. For me prior to the surgery, it was more about 'maintainence' not necessarily having to drink it all ya know? The same applies here.
Belgian Beer (which I have stirred the carbonation out of) doesn't even touch me anymore while a pint in the old days would knock me on my butt. Although, I've only tried it once, my tastebuds are not the same with it so why bother, ya know? Besides, I'm really not feeling like pushing it carbonation wise.
Red wine, even two sips throws me into a scary wasteland. Again, not the goal so, I'm over the red wine for awhile. But white wine is nice. It doesn't make me really wasted and I can tolerate 3-5 ounces in a whole evening (4 hrs). I never drink it all and I seem to tolerate it well. LIke tonight, I drank about 3 ozs, poured some more after a couple of hours and took a sip and never finished it/touched it again. I alternate with water...
Haven't tried martini's and honestly, I'm not really pushing it since I'm still having issues with tolerating food and my goal is to remain on track and since alcohol will derail you... why do it, ya know? I do find myself wanting to nibble with alcohol and well, if it comes down to that then I will not drink and maintain my resolve. Besides, it's a pain the ass to wait the 1/2 hr to eat then drink, etc.
As for maryjane... it's good. I've never gotten the munchies because I've always had a cup of coffee or something warm to drink which prevents me wanting to eat... Not that I"m an expert but ... just saying ; )
I'm not making a habit of any of this... it's just been nice to embibe during a holiday party. : ) I would definately be very careful and never drive, etc. Also to be aware of how it could become a convenient transfer. LIke anything else, enjoy in moderation which for us is a few sips at a time, nothing more, nothing less.
My best to you,
Colleen
Oh, and I didn't get wasted on 1/2 a drink.
This is totally just my opinion, but I don't want to live my life banning anything, including: wine, regular cheese, a bite of dessert.
I'd like to get to a place were making myself silly sick on any one thing is not something attractive anymore.. but really, that's just my 10 cents.
Ask your doctor and if you trust his/her judgment go with that.
About smoking pot, I suppose I could eat it, as my lungs are not so great, so smoking would not be good. Got a good laugh about the mentions of, since I was in CA, pot could be a solution. It is a thought but think I would be embarrased to get a prescription for it-LOL. I'm used to it being illegal.
