Mostly I just focused on protein first and didn't bother with counting carbs. I just chose low carb foods. By the time I finish my protein I don't have room for much else anyway.
For me to lose weight, I had to keep my carb grams at no more than 5 per meal. If I increase carbs, weight loss slows or stops. I also have to keep my total calories at under 1000.
I'm many years PO now, and I keep my carb grams well under what nutritionists recommend to diabetics. The nuts say 150 grams per day, I stay under 100 grams per day. Any time I need to lose a couple pounds in order to maintain my weight, it is the carbs that need to go.
My PO diet plan is 40% protein, 30% fats, 30% carbs. 1200 calories.
