when i went to the doc with pain in my feet be fore when he saw the swelling he said because of the gbs i cant go on salt pills ibuprofin and then he put me on celebrex.

From what I've learned. No NSAIDS, these can cause ulcers with just a few doses. Tylenol is really the only safe over the counter med to take for pain.

I use to be an Advil only girl until surgery. My doctor told me tylenol only release capsules and they work pretty good.

This is horrible news for me. I thought eventually I'd be able to take advil. My cramps, headaches, don't respond to anything but nsaids.

I was told the same thing but had a conversation with my surgeon's PA. I told her I have headaches and cramps and taking
Tylenol is like eating a tic tac. It does NOT work. She said that if you don't make a habit of it and only take it extremely sparingly, we can put you on another (or keep you on) the pecid because it will cause ulcers. I did just get my period, too, and the cramps were bad but I just didn't take anything because I was too nervous. This was one of the reasons I really thought long and hard about this surgery and got the lapband first hoping that would work. yea, It didn't!!

Talk to your doctor about this.

In fact, GBS patients CAN take NSAIDs if they also take a proton pump inhibitor - such as Prilosec, et al. However, individual cases may vary and there may be good reason to NOT do this - so it is important to discuss with your doctors.

I take 325mg aspirin per day. This was something that the docs had to work out - my cardiologist insisted I continue taking aspirin. My GBS team said "NO NSAIDs". After I got the two of them together, they agreed I could take aspirin so long as I also took Prilosec at the same time.

This is not medical advice. You should definitely talk to your doctors BEFORE using any NSAID product and closely follow their advice. I'm just pointing out that there MAY be hope of using ibuprofen if done in the proper way and coordinated with your doctors.

I have gout really severely and the only thing that helps is ibuprofen, i really had to think of this when having the surgery, but i was also told if you take somethign such as prilosec along with it, that it is safe but i would check with the doctor as well always better safe than sorry.. i am just praying that i wont go into a full onset of gout before or right after my surgery which will be this wednesday..yay!

Thanks everyone!! I am on prevacid daily anyway. . I'll ask my doc again but they said no. But I guess if it gets really bad in the future I might try it sparingly and see how I do. I definitely don't want to push it though.

If your doctor is unwilling to go ibuprofen, he may be willing to prescibe Lortab for occasional use. Lortab is a combination of Tylenol (acetameniphine) and hydrocodone (an opiate). My wife says that Lotab is VERY effective for cramps -- but it's not right for everyone. My wife is prescribed Lortab and uses it 2-3 days/month. A bottle of 30 usually lasts her 3 months.

Not sure what kind of pain you are having.. but I used to have aches and pains a year ago.. and now that I've lost 150 pounds I don't even get headaches anymore. Give it some time.. I think the pain will go away with the restrictions you've had from the weight! Don't take any NSAID's .. Advil is ibuprofin.. and the only safe thing to take is Tylenol.. or acetomenphin.. (sp?)..lol. It is so amazing now to never have stomach upset or anything I used to experience eating before.. no upset stomach, no acid reflux, no nothing. I was plagued with issues surrounding my old stomach.. and lived with the daily problems aftermath. If you do need a more powerful pain reliever see the doc for a prescription.. it's much safer. An unlcer in a tiny pouch is PAINFUL and can lead to more surgery.. not worth it! Your doc may be able to prescribe something more "fun" anyway.. lol. Good Luck!!
