Gastric Bypass Surgery Support Group
Gastric bypass (GBP) is any of a group of similar operative procedures used to treat morbid obesity, a condition which arises from severe accumulation of excess weight in the form of fatty tissue, and the health problems ("co-morbidities") which result. If you are considering gastric bypass or have had it, join the community where we share our experiences and find support.
I wasn't worried at all. I knew that it was a matter of life and death, and I was doing something to help myself and my loved ones.
To be honest the thing I was anxious about was the night before surgery, all the pre-surgery prep things I had to do to clean out........well let's just say they hit all at once. I had a night from hell, and spent it on the toilet........surgery the next day, stomach still grumbling, making noises. So to shorten this up.........I was afraid to have an accidental mess, while I was under anesthesia......I mentioned this to the nurse, cause she said I looked nervous and everything would be ok. Well she was surprised to hear that, first time according to her......she laughed and said I wouldn't be the first, that they just clean you up, and you never even know.
That didn't make me feel better. So yes I had to ask my surgeon the next day if I made a mess, and please be honest. She said NO, I hope she didn't lie.
You will do fine with your surgery, you will have some tough days......but you will be eternally thankful that you gave yourself and your family such a precious gift. It's called Life.
Good Luck,
Kelly
This is a big step, this is FORever, no do overs! I think I'd be more worried about somone who wasn't worried, at least a LITTLE bit!
You'll be fine, you'll do GREAT! And you have all of us here to talk things over, to scream, cuss, yell, brag, share and everything else you want to do. It's alllllllllllllll good!
Big Hugs,
Peggy
If GBS surgery itself doesn't scare the hell out of you, then you probably don't understand the surgery. Make no mistake, people do die from complications of gastric bypass surgery. This surgery is not a joke. It is not fun and it is certainly not easy. But the simple fact is that a LOT more people die from complication of obesity. By commiting to the surgery AND the subsequent change in lifestyle, you significantly increase your chances for living longer.
What if you screw it up and gain the weight back? First, it is critically important that you understand the surgery is just a tool - not a magic bullet. Understanding that you can screw it up and that the weight loss/maintenance does not 'just happen' gives you much better odds of sticking to the program. Keep hanging out here and you'll find many tips and friends that will help. There are people here who have be maintaining their weight loss for several years.
Now stop "what-iffing" yourself. No need to cross all those bridges until and unless you need to. Breathe deep and be confident you are taking a huge step toward a new you. Try browsing through a few of the many success stories here - this site and the people here are full of inspiration. Youre going to be fine. Better than fine, actually. It's going to take some time and some effort but you are going to be SO glad you did this.
