I am 3 years post op. Now very few things make me go into dumping syndrome. Sugar and grease are not my friends. Ice cream I can't do. It will make me dump bad. I used to love Chinese food. I still can do Chinese but must be very selective. Due to the sugar in some of it.
As far as Italian food. I don't know. I really don't care for it so don't have an opinion. I can eat pizza from the local gas station just fine and my mom made spaghetti a while back that didn't make me sick.
Congrats on deciding to go for the RNY. It's a life saver!
Anything strange or different I have to do with food? Compared to before? Chew it to mush. Eat slowly and mindfully and pay attention to my body's signals. No standing to eat, no barfing or burping. I've retched a few times if I ate something too high in sugar or fat. But that is uncommon.
Congrats on making the choice for revision! Since you already don't do red meats, pasta, or bread you are already half way there.
When I go Italian, one of my favorites is to have a bowl with one to three meatballs, depending on the size, I'm shooting for a 1/4 lb., with a little marinara and some parmesan cheese on top, sometimes I ask for a sprinkle of mozzarella or provolone too. That and a small salad gives me a great dinner and lunch the next day.
Caprese' salad is a great lunch: fresh mozzarella cheese, ripe tomatoes, fresh sweet basil leaves and a drizzle of balsamic dressing. Sometimes I add a tiny bit of olive oil for the flavor, but that's not traditional.
Lastly, if you're cooking for yourself, Mission make some great low carb tortillas. Use them as a pizza crust with your own fresh toppings and they are great. Just don't over do it. My friend with RNY can only eat half or it causes dumping, I can eat a whole one.
You'll find what you can tolerate over time. Practice makes perfect.
1. There are foods I cannot tolerate and foods I never attempted and choose not to eat:
Can't tolerate - eggs, fish, yogurt, lunchmeat
Don't eat/drink - rice, pasta, bread, flour, sugar, most fruit, carbonated drinks
2. Italian is one of the more difficult restaurants for me. I'd either order a salad with chicken or ask for chicken with a side of marinara sauce.
3. I chew everything to a liquid before I swallow it. If I can't chew it to a liquid, I don't swallow it. When I eat meat, I usually need some kind of sauce with it to moisten it (low-fat sour cream, marinara sauce, guacamole, etc). I eat very slowly. Oh, and I don't drink with meals or 30 minutes before/after I eat.
Best decision I've ever made!!
