Very soon I will be 3 years post up and I wanted to share how Weight loss surgery (WLS) did not give me my life back but instead gave me a whole brand new life.
I was approved for WLS in 2002 but never followed through. I grew to almost 400 lbs (my mistress were Little Debbie, Wendys, Sara Lee) and in 2008 I had two young boys. I was a sideline father to them, any time we went to the park I sat on a bench, I preferred to stay home rather than be in public. It was when I finally saw the sadness in my young boys eyes that I knew had to make a change. I tried so many diets but none of them stuck with me. My Dr. was telling me either my body fails me and I am rushed to the ER or I can make choose to go for WLS on my terms.
Another 9 months went by until I passed the requirements needed for WLS. I was two months post op when I first found this site, because I was researching ways to reverse GBS. The help I got here was instrumental in helping my mind stay focused. It sucked at first, I wont kid ya, it was not all sunshine and rainbows, in fact I had to have a 2nd surgery for a fistula caused by my body change but the reward of a healthy life is so worth it and I would do it again.
I do things now that I could have only dreamed about before. I race my kids up the playground and they tire out before me. I used to HATE, HATE exercise and now I enjoy running almost every morning. The non scale victories come almost daily and I still get shocked when I walk by mirrors, as my mind sees that 400lb guy but my eyes see the new me.
Now your mileage may vary but for me this was a blessing and I am healthier and happier than ever before in my life.
The best way I can explain WLS (and I got this from JJ) was to use an example of pushing a boulder up a hill, I could do it for a short while but I could never sustain the momentum. Every diet I had was like pushing up this boulder. WLS let me flatten the hill and now I can keep pushing that boulder with momentum.
