I know there has been things mentioned about this before. But here it goes. Today I got a unsweetened tea from the local gas station and without thinking plunked in a straw and started drinking. Thing is I have been sipping my fluids without a straw since surgery and every time I sip I end up having to burp and get a really full feeling in my pouch. Today sipping through the straw I didn't get that feeling whenever I took a sip and did great. I am wondering if it is really bad to drink from a straw or not.

Some docs say no straws but mine was not one of them, my team just advised us to be careful the first time or two with a straw because we might get too much at once. Like you, I did better with a straw than by sipping.

My doctor says no straws because of getting too much air, but I have problems with air taking baby sips so who knows.

I started drinking from straw last week and have had no problems and I actually find it easier to get all my fluids in if I can sip, sip, sip all day from a straw. If you're carefull not to gulp or drink to fast I say go for it.

My team said no straws, but I started using them again as soon as I got home because I couldn't stand to drink my protein shakes without one.

I've never had a problem.

Thanks ladies. I haven't had a problem with a straw and tend to sip really slowly with a straw. I think I take to much liquid in when I don't use a straw. I kept using a straw the rest of the day and before using the straw I hadn't even gotten in 8 ounces of fluid for the day because it was so hard to choke it down. Since starting with the straw this afternoon I have been able to get down my protein shakes and the required liquid with no problem. I think I am going to continue with the straw and just be careful.

my old team said no straws ever.....untill i was not able to keep things down then it was try a straw.

my new team tells preops no straws at first ........not for now but not no forever. so id go with what your particular program wants or if you disagree discuss it with them and understand why. I wouldnt ever take it upon myself to just disagree with my doc and not let him know. For myself personally I feel I have to be upfront and check with my doc before taking something even like this upon myself. It seriously must do something for all our programs to say nononono or not for now.

My program doesn't allow straws. I haven't tried to and won't. Too afraid of what might happen. I guess I am a rule follower! :)

I talked with my surgeons office today and told them what I have discovered. They gave me the go ahead to use straws as long as I am careful. So that is the plan to carefully use straws.
