Hello, I am 2 months out from gastric bypass surgery. I have a feeling that my husband is trying to sabatoge me. When he fixes my plate, knowing to use my little four section toddlere plate and that I am only allowed to eat 1/4 of a cup he loads a regular plate like I didn't even have the surgery. Any suggestions? Also he has been really mean and nasty towards me, I don't know why. Any support will help at this point.

Suggestions? Well, yes. Fix your own plate so you can choose what you want. Communication is imperative if you are to have a healthy relationship. Part of this journey is learning to speak up and stand up for yourself. If “he has been really mean and nasty towards you” the question to consider is why are you letting him? This is not about him, this is about you. We teach people how to treat us. Focus on what you want, not on what you don’t want.

Definitely fix your own plate for starters. Second, think about the journey you're on. You're changing in ways he may not be comfortable with. It's also not uncommon that when one person in a relationship starts taking care of themselves for the better that the other person can become resentful and feel left behind. He may feel like you're changing in ways he wasn't prepared for and it could be he's jealous. Talk to him. He has no right to be mean and nasty to you when you're doing good things to take care of yourself. If he won't be be part of your cheering section then that says a lot about him and your relationship. You deserve someone whose going to be your biggest cheerleader and supporter.

Right now, I am just waiting for an apartment to open up near my mom. I have no other person to turn to or even to have a place to stay. Couples counseling is not helping.

As far as fixing my own plate, yea right. God forbid I fix my own plate.

I think things would be ok if he would just admit that he is afraid that I will leave him for another man. My sister in laws have gone through the same thing with their husbands.

Divorce is a common occurrence in relation to GB. It takes lots of open communication and mutual support for any strong marriage. We have to communicate.

My doctor has a monthly support group for GB patients and any one who wants to go. There are plenty of spouses there. Maybe if your doctor has something like mine you can bring you spouse so he can under stand your struggles and maybe be a bit more understanding. It helped my wife get on board with me
