On both sides of my front steps are these tall, very ugly bushes. I don't know what they're called, but you can't cut them back because when you do, they leave huge bare spots. They really are ugly to look at, so I thought about pulling them out. Can I just replant something there, or do I have to let the soil 'rest' for a year or two before planting something a little more pleasing?
I wish I could take a pic of them to post on here to see if anyone else has had to deal with this ugly things, but my camera broke recently.

I'm not a terribly patient person when I want something changed. :o}
I will be planting something new soon after.
They were beautiful but we a 1 kid with a pollen allergy & another with a skin contact & pollen allergy. I planted blackberries immediately to crowd out any chance of regrowth from root fragments. They lasted until I had a bagworm infestation.
