Not about gambling but how in the world I got here. I found this wonderful site and have been reading all the posts sometimes more than once. I can not believe the pain I am feeling right now. I am 56yrs old, a gamblaholic, a foodaholic and an alcoholic. What next. I use to be the type of person who was in control all the time and now I am so out of control. Reading all the posts has given me such thought provoking moments. I have sitting crying over what I have done in the last 13yrs and how weak I have gotten. I am going to change my ways, today and everyday. I really do need some professional help. Thank goodness for this site.

I don't think addiction only picks on the weak or the dumb or those without morals. I consider myself smart, dependable, kind, honest, caring and hard working. Addiction still took a hold of me. I did things I am deeply ashamed of but I am learning to forgive myself. It is a disease. It is not a character flaw.

I agree with ll2live, addiction can grab hold of anyone, regardless of intelligence, strength, character, etc. It's insidious and damaging to our self-worth. Try not to beat yourself up. You were strong enough to walk away for 2 days, just keep doing it one day at a time. For me the first day I stopped was the hardest. Wanting to go chase losses and "one more chance" to hit that big jackpot that would help me pay off all my debt. After you are away from it for a few days you will start to think about other things, things you may have missed or wanted to do but spent your time gambling and/or drinking. Stick with us, you can do it!

I agree...this is an amazing group here. Something else that is a blessing is that you are here...I am happy that you are finding comfort in reading.

I think reading is so therapeutic for all of us...we realize that we are not alone.

Addiction does not discriminate..doesn't matter who we are or what walk of life we came from...we are just here to see us through another day...good or bad.
