98 days in recovery. My Sundays used to be all about staying in the card room for as long as I could, which was usually a layover from Friday night. Of course, my phone would be exploding, since my family members would have known by now that I was out in the casino. I would worry everyone, and of course lie about what I was doing or where I was, and when I finally realized, there was no way I could lie anymore, I just turned my phone off. Talk about reckless!
Today, I get to wake up and do the day. Whatever it is I feel like doing. This morning, I sat in my backyard, and watched the humming birds, and looked around, thinking,,,, thank you God. I get to do the day. Yesterday I had to go to a condo close to the border of Mexico, and tell a poor soul that his landlord didn't pay the mortgage and he had to move. This poor soul was handicapped, physically and mentally, little did he know that he was paying rent to someone who didn't pay their mortgage. I had to wonder, was the owner of the unit a compulsive gambler? The amount of people this addiction touches and hurts is crazy. When I was in the casino on a Sunday afternoon, my mom would be worried sick, so bad that her heart rate would speed up and she would be literally sick. Although I cared and I love my family, this addiction took me away from caring for anyone, including myself.
Today, my family isn't worried, although I live with my daughter, who is never home, and I have free will, to do what I want to do, I am not in a card room. My phone still explodes if my family doesn't know where I am, and even if I tell them, I'm okay, I know they still worry in the back of their minds, because, they know this addiction, if I choose to act on it, will and can kick my ass.
Today is my Sunday, I get to do the day, I don't have to worry about telling a lie. I remember sitting in the card room, after a few days of endless card shuffling and looking towards the front entrance, wondering who was coming in to save me. Nobody, they all surrendered and realized, that even if they pulled me out, I would go again, so, they let go with love, and prayed. Their prayers were not on deaf ears.

and someday, you will lose track of days and just BE. Be the person you really are and not the addict you once were.
I'm only just over 35 or so days, but now that I've banned myself, my life is quickly becoming manageable.

and, proud of others, whether it's one day, one week, whatever time away from addiction is a blessing.....
