How do people get your private email from here? I thought all message etc went thru this site?

If you notice on the person's profile it was made today and I thought it was all private too, well apparently not. I am so aggravated !!

I've gotten a few oddball emails lately too, but they all came thru DailyStrength asking if I would be their friend.

I removed my city name because of it.

I am going to change my past journal entries to "me and friends."

Froggy go into your settings and change your email. Maybe it was someone new to the group and just didnot understand how to get in contact with the members. Probably harmless person looking to chat with you.

How do the email settings work?
To access your email settings, sign in, and go to My Account.

In the messaging section, choose:

Individual Emails --receive individual emails of personal and friend activity.
Daily Digest --receive a daily digest of personal and friend activity.
Weekly Digest --receive a weekly digest of personal and friend activity.
Website Only --receive messages, updates, and other information online only.
Receive Daily Support Group Updates --receive an overview of activity in your support groups.

I've got a few weird ones, too. Made me feel the same way, gave me the creeps! Did she get your email address, from here? Or just a message to send her your email address? Is that how you could see her email address, she gave it to you? It is a bit crazy in the cyber space world, that's for sure. And in the real world, too, I suppose. But for me personally, anything I'm putting out here isn't top secret, not anymore. None of my family members have shown any interest in my Daily Strength, however, they've all heard me talk about it. Sure there's probably stuff in my journals, or where ever, that I might not want them to read, but not really. I know they're respecting my privacy. This is the 1st time I've ever journaled, or joined a discussion online, or sent a lovely, cyber space hug...love em' ... I don't have any fears about potential employers, or anyone else, of discovering I'm a member here, ya' know what I mean? It's all true, I'm a recovering, compulsive gambler. I'm putting it all out there, I also have to add, I know this is easier for me than others, due to the fact I'm a stay at home wife, kids are on there own now, all grown up. Now I'm growing up ;) I love recovery, everything about it. Any snoop wants to read my journals, they better be ready for an onslaught, I have other a yrs worth out there...ups & downs, highs & lows, the good, the bad and the ugly. My journal started out with mountains of fear, and has progressed to a much better state of mind. Please don't leave our little group because of onelove123's stupid email, we need you. And I'm sorry this had to happen to you, I know how unnerving it can be. I hope your feeling better about the whole, sordid affair. Here for you, no matter what. Hugs

She said she got mine from here and ask if I would send her a private email, because she was interested in me, she has a profile just created today, I checked to see what the hell
this was about, it had nothing to do with gambling at all. I had gotten one a few days ago from someone like an advertisemnt for something, which I just ignored but Gee, this was just ridiculous !!

I reply to those messages with something along these lines:

"**, perhaps you would consider posting your thoughts in a Journal in the Daily Strength Gambling Addiction & Recovery support group area (if that is where your need lies).

There are many with whom you can read your journals and respond to you. There are male and female alike who are either in your shoes or in your spouses.

I hope the best for you. If you do journal and come here and read you may just find the support you need to keep your sanity and to figure a way to constructively deal with the situation you are in."

I ususally do not hear back from anyone after sending that type of reply.

I received 2 e-mails also from the same person a 24 year old and I went to the profile and it said she just joined today. It came thru the my message section of my DS account. I just deleted them. It didn't come on my personal e-mail account.

There are all kinds of folks out there..and I periodically get a message or comment that is some kind of weird come-on...people who have nothing to do with gambling sometimes ask me to chat. I just ignore them and seem to have no further problems...

I think you will find this is a spam mail - the same as you can get by visiting sites and then get emails from strange people.
Changing the settings will help. If you email is open this is why you are getting them. Mine is set to private

I'm sorry this has offended you so much. I have dealt with a few messages here that I have simply ignored. I figure if the person needs a response they will go elsewhere. But I completely understand the annoyance. I just had a telemarketer hang up on me when I asked who it was that was calling my house asking for my 13 year old son by name. I still have no idea where they would have gotten his name, but hopefully the same one won't be calling anymore. The most important thing is that you don't let some idiot keep you from continuing your recovery.

I would never open an email from anyone I do not know. It sucks that in this day and age people look for the weak and try to take advantage of them. I would not be surprised if you get hacked or viruses from opening emails of this sort. The site should try and put some sort of security on this as well as we are all being very open with our problems and saying some personal things to one another and that should be respected!!!
