Abuse in my family of origin led to me picking abusive spouses in my marriages. Each time I sought help/treatment in my life regardless of the reason, I grew a little. As I got healthier, I made better decisions, as I removed abusive people from my life I recognized the self abuse more clearly. Part of what helped me quit gambling was realizing this fundamental personality defect. If I see a poker machine now, I visualize the face(s) of my abusers on their screens. The self-loathing that gambling led me too was excruciating, I have never been so alone and hopeless.

Congratulations on three days, it took me many attempts to get to three days, I just attained 11 months, 10 days of abstinence and I did one day at a time.
