When I talk about "the monster"...I'm not referring to any demon, devil, or evil spirit whatsoever...
I am referring to the force the addiction exercises on my life when I indulge it. As Moyer said, it is a METAPHOR.
"The Monster" is just the name I call my addiction. The addiction is ruthless and wants to be fed...and will continue to eat away at my character and my very life if I allow it.
In order for me to stop gambling....it was helpful to separate "me" from the addiction...that part of me that has CHOICES...and makes no EXCUSES. That is when I started talking about my addiction as though it were a separate entity..."the Monster".
It has been very helpful for me at times to think in these terms....there is the part of me that doesn't want to gamble....that can refuse that part of me that does want to gamble, no matter what the cost.
I am not a believer in evil forces. I don't need an exorcism. I need a way of life and tools to allow me to deal with, and put the addiction in its place...and not allow my gambling to take over my life.
I find "the Monster" concept useful in describing the way the addiction operates in my life.
The concept of "the Monster" is just a tool I use. I am not blaming my gambling on some external force...."the Monster" is just that part of me that is addicted to gambling. To resist that part...I like to conceptually separate myself from it.
It is a way of realizing that there is much more to me...than the identity of being a compulsive gambling addict!
