I just read Born to Lose by Lee. His urges felt very familiar. His work ethic was not one that I could compare with. I could relate to a lot of it. I also was looking for something to read so I will be following this discussion

hey leap, hows it going, i read that book, born to lose, and pretty much anything i could get my hands on, but what i've learned in my journey back from hell, its just better to fill my head with books of self care, and warmth and love and power of attraction and positive thinking, for me to read and re read about the disaster of gambling kinda triggers more negativity for me in my brain, so i try to just keep my brain focused on positive ANYTHING, other than the "C" word and the "G" word.....

1. "The Art of Extreme Self Care" by Cheryl Richardson. Not about gambling recovery but about self care.
2. "The Financial Wisdom of Ebenezer Scrooge" by Rick Kahler. Not about gambling recovery but about an individual's relationship with money. For me, I had a lot of issues with money before I became a compulsive gambler. It is one of the things that I truly believe led me to becoming an addicted gambler.
3. "A Day at a Time" Meditation book from Gamblers Anonymous.
4. "The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous" and a lot of other AA books. Substitute the work "alcoholic" with "compulsive gambler" and the word "alcohol" with "gambling."

I did not care for "Born to Loose" because the author wrote so much about his actions when gambling; it was as thought I could picture it and I got the urge from reading his book. But that is me. Others may have an entirely different experience.

Also, Hazelden.com has a lot of literature available for purchase. "Understanding Compulsive Gambling'" and ""Taking Back Your Life" was written for women who are recovering from this horrible disease. There is more literature that you can purchase, too.

I also read two books from Gamblers Anonymous: "A New Beginning" and the "Big Book" and I found them very helpful to me.

I hope this helps. These are books and literature that helped me personally. I like what "its just me" said, though...sometimes it is better to let go of the gambling stuff and focus on the "taking care of me" stuff.

I've read a few books on gambling; most have been good. "Hats and Eyeglasses" was an interesting read; I've also gotten a lot of good advice from Allen Carr's "Easy Way to Stop Gambling." It's different -- it's based on Allen Carr's approach to stopping smoking -- but helpful nonetheless. "The Prosperous Heart" by Julia Cameron, while not about gambling, has been very helpful to me, too.

When Luck Runs Out by Dr Robert Custer who started the first addiction center for compulsive gamblers and was instrumental in getting it recognized as a mental illness.

If you were a slots player "Addiction by Design" by Natasha Schull is really eye opening. " Taking back your Life" by Diane Davis, "Healing & Recovery" by David Hawkins and "The Addictive Personality" by Craig Nakken

Another good book that I enjoyed is "She Bets Her Life"- a true story of gambling addiction, by Mary Sojourner. Recognizing that the life of a compulsive gambler is not a straight line, each chapter speaks to a particular point of the long and winding road. Depending upon where you are in your journey, one chapter, not necessarily the 1st, may be of particular interest to you.

I loved them all....start to finish!
