Gambling Addiction & Recovery Support Group
Compulsive gambling is an urge or addiction to gamble despite harmful negative consequences or a desire to stop. A preferred term among many professionals is problem gambling, as few people described by the term experience true compulsions in the clinical sense of the word. Problem gambling often is defined by whether harm is experienced by the gambler or others rather...

Day 8 in my recovery. I'm doing better, not great, but better. I'm able to find a reason to smile, and I've been working around my house, getting my energy back and motivated to move around, rather than sulk around. Its funny, how I was thinking this last weekend, "this time last week" I made that dreadful turn, and I was trying to remember where I was, I am not kidding when I say the relapse is a blur, I know I went, that's for sure, but my time table is off. It was also strange as I sat with my dogs last night, I was thinking OMG, from Saturday until now, I was not home last week, I was gone that entire time, which in retrospect seemed like forever, when I was thinking about it last night. Odd, all that wasted time, wasted emotions, wasted money. Odd to me, still.
I'm not beating myself up anymore, I am moving forward, and I'm taking action. But, to be true, the memory, or memories come in a flash to me, as I'm driving some place, or sitting quietly, its as though I am having a bad flashback. I know this all sounds odd, but honestly, this was by far the worst for me, even during the 10 years I gambled, this time, it hit me so hard, that I know in my heart, as badly as I want to be in recovery, I need to listen, learn, and practice the GA program, all the way, not my way, not a half ass way. I need to practice the program 110%.
xoxoxoxoxo my warriors, I'm making my way back, a better person for it, and I can tell you, its not different, its worse, its not better, its worse. It doesn't change, it gets worse, trust me on that, if anything good comes from my relapse, I hope you read this and take it to heart.

hi leap. doesnt sound odd to me at all that you have gotten flashbacks of last weekend. i have experienced flashbacks many times. lets face it a gambling binge is a traumatic event for us. any traumatic event can lead to flashbacks . i also fully relate to it all being a blur. had that many times myself. its almost like an out of body experience . i drink heavily when i gambled so that added to the blur feeling. well glad to see you are moving forward .. guess thats all we can do. take care friend. hugs! johnny

Glad you are still here and posting often Leap! This road isn't an easy one and Lord knows, it was a hard one for me. I had many rocks I tripped over to get where I am today. I still have struggles with urges and I have to fight like hell to not give in. Today, for example, I went to Walmart for a few items and there's a little local place (Dottie's) where you can pop in and play slots/video poker and I drive right past it in the Walmart parking lot. Something in my head said, "oh, just go and play $10 for a few minutes." I had to let the thought pass and move along. Gambling is everywhere in my city - every single place you go. It is willpower that gets me by. I can't ban myself so I just have to not give in to the urges. I know if I go, it's all she wrote. Hang in there - it's all I can do. As my friend said with my new fitness/diet thing, "I appreciate your efforts." And I told her "effort is all I have." Same with gambling - effort is all I have. I am making every damn effort I can to stay quit. I may fail, but I am giving this all I have with every last bit of energy and willpower! We all can do this! I try not to count the days, but sometimes I have to in order to see where I am at ;=))
