This addiction like all addiction can get a hold of anyone. Doesn't matter your education, intelligence, class, race, colour, etc.

This is her first step to recovery. The weight that was on her shoulders. ..... The more more money a person with addiction can get a hold of is the more money they can use to feed the addiction.
It is a sad life.

Imagine how miserable and ashamed she had to be for over a year. Then to be in the public eye so that the shaming continues publicly is the ultimate punishment. At least as a private citizen, not in the public eye, my gambling addiction and recovery is relatively private and I get to pick and choose to whom I tell my story.
I cannot imagine the pain this woman and her family are enduring. She will have much work to do to overcome the shame and the pain.

I pray and cry, for her and all the other compulsive gamblers that are still operating in the painful, lonely, dark, secret world of addiction.

The first part of this video is from a clinical perspective the second part is a compulsive gambler in recovery with a very interesting and somewhat familiar story. Very much points out that it can happen to anyone.
