Compulsive gambling is an urge or addiction to gamble despite harmful negative consequences or a desire to stop. A preferred term among many professionals is problem gambling, as few people described by the term experience true compulsions in the clinical sense of the word. Problem gambling often is defined by whether harm is experienced by the gambler or others rather...
By this time you know that we, as compulsive gamblers do not have the capacity (for the most part) to win and walk away. If we do that, it is far and few between. A guy at my meeting calls it "temporarily holding their money", which I think is very true. Because if we do happen to win we will return and put it all back...and more!
Get off the mad carousel. Do what you have to to stay away. DO read as much as you can here and other places. You are not alone, and you are not a bad person. Gambling makes us do things we would never have believed possible. But it is possible to stop.
I know right now you are completely overwhelmed, but you will get past this. Keep your head up and keep coming back to the forum. You might try other things. Many people here go to counseling. Maybe you can give GA a try. It (and DS) has worked for me. Don't give up hope. It really will get better...If you put down the shovel, and move away from the hole. Hugs, ~atticus
Please don't beat yourself up and please do reach out for help. I learned after several times of trying to stop gambling on my own that I could not do it without help. Every time, I would get sucked back in by the addiction voice in my head, telling me it was okay to go back, that I missed it, and I would succumb. You are most definitely not alone, and you have come to the right place! (((((HUGS)))))))
Incentive to stop. "Gambling is a fun sucker."
What has helped me is thinking about the ride home after I have lost my money. Incentive to stop!

There is a story about the pickle. Once a cucumber has become a pickle it can never be a cucumber again. We can never go back to how it was. I wish you the strength to keep coming back and seek out any resources available to you in your local community. Counseling, GA, whatever you can find, and DO keep coming back to this site. It has been an invaluable source for me.
Hugs, ~atticus
