Not a dumb question. I don't work. My husband was killed on the job in 1997 and I receive benefits which are not taxable. So if I don't have any taxable income, I don't have to file a tax return.
They just got my info somehow and decided to give it a go and hope the IRS wouldn't pay attention.
According to the IRS, there are websites out there that get your info and then sell it.
Scary, right?
Lady at the IRS said they were investigating 1/2 million similar cases this year. Boggles the mind.
If even a tenth of those get paid, lots of money is being given to these crooks.
