My husband has been my best friend for 26 years and he just doesn't get my gambling addiction. He looks at those slots and they make no sense to him, he goes into the casino and sees everyone in their little bubble and just does not get the allure or how I could have thought of it as fun.

People tend to judge what they do not understand. Sometimes that makes me sad and feel alone other times I am grateful they don't get it- it means they have not had to contend with this wretched addiction.


Thank goodness for our friends who are also in recovery.

I agree with Sabine. For my 50th birthday, my sons and I went to the casino. I LOVE the casino. My younger son (22) said to me that he just sees me glazed over and he can tell by the look in my eye that I'd sit at those machines until every penny is gone. He himself played and lost $20 and drank coffee until he could pull me away. He, thank God, doesn't get it.

Nobody is perfect, but yes, people do judge one another.
And this one of the reason why place like this coneects us so deeply. We understand eachother, we've been in their shoes, we walk the same path of journey together.

I am too, glad there are many people such as my husband don't get it. As much fulfilling this journey has been for me, I don't wish anyone to be here if it can be helped.

haha, I remember those days, my few hour celebration of my birthday turned into 2-3 day gambling binge. And then I wonder how I had such a bad birthday aftermath.

I am judgmental to rude people, to narrow minded people, drug users, smokers and alcoholics, other gamblers at the casino who would sit next to me or occupy my favorite slots, or especially the ones who would win next to me and I didn't.... but my gambling always been justified.
I learned a lot more understanding through going to GA and having to listen to all those "losers", some of which would irritate the heck out of me. We, addicts, especially gamblers, just extremely talented manipulators and control freaks. Required by nature of our addiction. That is why it is not just important to stop and stay abstinent, but do work on deep character defects, which is life long process and requires a lot of commitment, along with humbleness.

My husband likes to say, "when you point a finger at someones direction, there is 3 fingers pointing at you" and he is recovering from another 12 step program. :)
