When I first sought help I wanted to reverse it. I wanted the counselor to take the addiction away and let me be a social gambler again.(Preferably using the magic wand method.) I was so full of false pride and false beliefs. Without the long, lonely, even hopeless struggle that my addictions have inflicted on me I would not have sought the help that I truly needed. Without the darkest times I likely would not have had the motivation to make sweeping lifestyle changes.
I remember it sounding strange the first time I heard someone in recovery say that they were thankful for their addiction. But now, I realize that without having gone through the hell, I would not have gained the friendships, the hobbies, the spirituality, the creativity, the variety, the color, the fullness and the peace I have in my life now.
