It takes facing reality, doing what needs to be done and facing the internal feelings to get to where we can deal with all the stuff the world throws at us. We will have to rescue ourselves, become the good parent that is a kind, nurturing, loving, gentle disciplinarian that most of us did not have. We need to first treat ourselves well, in order to teach others how we will be treated.
Secondly, we as addicts have a social deprivation. Friendships are are not whipped up like instant mashed potatoes to be then consumed. They are built with time. Most of us compulsive gamblers ruined many of our friendships by being absent. That is part of why GA is successful, there is an instant group of people that know the pain and misery that gambling can bring. If you really want to quit gambling it is only fair to give GA a full-fledged College try investing your whole heart and soul before you dismiss it. That being said, GA is not for every one.
In order to make friendships it helps to obtain some friendship capital. What have you done lately that worth's talking about? Have you read a good book lately? Seen a play or a concert? Do hike, take photos, or collect anything. Do you travel beyond a 10 mile radius, do you see plays? Do you have a political opinion?
Usually people remain single if they are too desperate to be coupled - the desperation runs people away - other than desperate people. Do you take care and maintain the friendships that you do have? Is there anyone living that is important to you? Have you made them a handmade card lately? Do you visit the ones you love? What do you do to show people you appreciate them. Work on being the kind of person you want to attract. Or work on being the kind, nurturing, healthy person you would like to attract.
I used to feel like you, I got counseling and did a lot of work, changed my lifestyle, my attitude, and how I talk to myself. Now that I am not spending all my time in front of a machine, I keep a gratitude diary, I take classes, I go to the library, I call people, I do artwork, I read things, I go to the movies, I volunteer, I talk to people on the bus, I go to public events, I hike, I bike, I make new friends at least monthly. I am over 60. (I began making more friends when I became friends with myself)
