Compulsive gambling is an urge or addiction to gamble despite harmful negative consequences or a desire to stop. I have found since my last bet (nov. 24,2010) that one of my worst triggers is arguements. Everytime I have had some kind of emotional turmoil with someone my urges are really strong. I knew my own issues spur triggers but now I have found that others emotions when affecting mine can spur triggers also. I have to be really careful when interacting with others not to allow them to get me upset. This can be a recipe for disaster. I just wanted to share some more insight that I have been getting since I ve stopped gambling. You really have to deal with the issues affecting your emotions so that you remain calm. This is real important when dealing with others. You can t allow their emotions to rattle yours and spur your triggers. God Bless. One day at a time.

I think you are totally right about this, because I noticed in my shopping addiction that there are triggers. I use the shopping as a form of relief after a negative emotion be it mad or sad. Thx for sharing your thoughts....

hey there 47.for me.my experience strength and hope is this.avoiding emotions can be very dangerouis for me."not allow them to upset me" as you said. My feelings are just that,MINE. At any given moment, how ever I feel,is alright, good. Feelings are just that, feelings. Neither right nor wrong. It is what I do with them, that I some time's have trouble.I am worth having these feelings.it's not about staying calm when I feel anger(as a example).Part of it is acceptance. I am a human being. I have the right and the worth for these emotions. and I need to really examine the "cause"of what I am fealing. Does it effect my recovery.God bless.

Strange, when I read your post I thought "no way" then I took a look at my history with gambling, and my food addiction, and I do the SAME thing, when I get angry or upet I use it as an excuse to gamble or to eat. That was a huge eye opener! thank you.

I think that is key for me too. I am coming to terms with being a highly sensitive person, that means I get over whelmed easy, I get over stimulated and affected by other people too. I think it is really important to go to a place of stillness, peace and calm when arguments happen. Go outside or write or rest. Just don't let it over whelm you so you find your self blowing off steam in an unhealthy way. Find what helps you to feel healthy.

We need to fix the inside. That s what s broken. Then the outside situations, whatever they are, will not affect us in a negative way. Only Faith in God can put us on the right path to internal peace. That s the key to overcoming this or any addiction. The desires for external stimulation start to decrease as are internal desires are fulfilled. One day at a time. God Bless.
