Compulsive gambling is an urge or addiction to gamble despite harmful negative consequences or a desire to stop. A preferred term among many professionals is problem gambling, as few people described by the term experience true compulsions in the clinical sense of the word. Problem gambling often is defined by whether harm is experienced by the gambler or others rather...

I feel like this is my 8th trip to "rock bottom" but how is that possible? Isn't that oxymoronic on it face to say that? Financially, I have no assets and a mountain of debt. However, in this regard I am fortunate that my wife is in the same career as me so our mortgage is up to date, etc. And I do carry my weight on that end, as well as utilities, child care etc, for fear of her wrath. She has her own demons as an alcoholic but I'm powerless to intervene and try to help her to stop because I am in no place to judge. Although, last Sunday afternoon, my eldest daughter hurt herself and it fell on me to take her to the ER because she was too intoxicated to drive her. I am not upset or bitter at my wife but rather myself because my compulsive gambling has made me powerless to intervene.
it's as though we trade off our dysfunctions and turn a blind eye until something goes wrong. Well, things have gone wrong for me. Over the past 2 years I have depleted my 401K, added new debt, and pretty much burn through a paycheck in a few days either gambling or covering my account being overdrawn from the previous pay cycle. I feel like a leech and an abject failure. Idk how to stop, sincerely stop. It is something that is within me but if I keep on this trajectory, it will become me. I actually tried to apply logic and pragmatism as to why my wife, children, and friends would be much better off without me..permanently if you know what I mean.
This is what I fear now. I seem more numb and devoid of emotion lately than at any point in my life. Most people would find apathy to be liberating but it really frightens me. Apathy with regards to myself and my own circumstance. I pray daily for my wife to find the strength to be who she used to be and for my children to never become like me. Gambling in any form or discussion is never allowed in the house..not even the Kentucky Derby airing on ESPN. I grew up tagging along to the Track since I was 11 every weekend and that kind of exposure I will not tolerate. So generally as a gambler I am completely selfish with regards to money but I will do all in my power to prevent my kids from following my path. But it is a fight to go to sleep at a decent time and a fight to wake up in the morning. I feel like the hours just go by and I follow a day-by-day playbook. While I may not gamble as frequently, I just spend more when I go to the casino. For 2 years the only table game was poker..(swear this isn't a cop-out) but that period was the only time I was responsible with money. Bankroll limitations, earn rates, very disciplined. Eventually blackjack and all the rest were added and everything went out the window. The savings I accumulated from poker over the 2 years were depleted in 2 months...then my savings from work..and you know the rest. Don't get me wrong, prior to poker I blew everything on slots and racing, but poker gave me direction and an outlet that I could control. The times I lost were never enormous and it never bothered me because I usually knew the person I lost to and was ok with it. Set limits with time and money. But my compulsion for the other far outweighs any chance at a part-time poker job. I don't know what side-tracked me on that and I swear it's not a segue to ask "how can I gamble one way but avoid the others"..it was more to illustrate how quickly I depleted and devolved myself when the new flavor of candy was offered at the casino.
So, the GA meetings here are limited to Tues/Thurs at 7pm..either I work 9-9 or I'm off and my wife works 9-9 and even if I got sitter, 7pm is prime homework/dinner time and I can't outsource that.
Realistically I know that if I don't stop now, I will never have anything but debt and I don't even know if there is enough time to get out of this mess and build a nest egg. How can I stop without the GA meetings? Is it even possible or is this like heroin addiction where the biochemistry of the brain actually changes and evolves over time? I'm past the "if only I would stick to poker" or "if only I would leave my debit card at home"..etc. I really bounce between self-loathing and apathy and I think the latter is worse because at least when I hate myself, I emote. This is more of a vent tan an advice grab and I am sorry to burden you. At some point we grow up and claim responsibility. But another part of growing up is accepting who we are and what we are. Am I deluding myself?? Is gambling who I am and I just have to embrace that some lives are tragic to therefore accentuate the lives that are lived well. Would Mother Theresa even matter if we didn't have a Charles Manson to see the difference between the two?? Would "Gone with the Wind" be an epic if we didn't have "Gigli" and "Showgirls" to have a bar to be set. Lord, am I Gigli? Is it my purpose and role to be a failure so others can appreciate their success? Well, sorry for my treatise but this is where I am today. Is it a "good place" or a "bad place" and am I just wasting space? I don't know but as bad as it has been at times..the lying, guilt, debt accumulation, sleepless nights, broken relationships..I just wait it out till I have more income and excuses and lose it all again..wondering if my next "rock bottom" will be worse and will be hurt along with me. Perhaps it's never been the income that's disposable. Maybe it's me that's disposable. Sorry again for the rant, but that's the thing about living a lie, you have nobody to talk to. Well, I've been gamble free for 48 hours. Maybe I should set smaller goals and just try to extend the time between my screw-ups. But even that 48 hour statement is bogus. Not a lie because I truly haven't gambled in 48 hours. I just say it's bogus because had I won 48 hours ago, I'd still be gambling. Easier to stop when you have no money..hope I can say the same after I get paid next. Sorry again, but I do appreciate your time and I'm proud of those who have stopped and I honestly respect and look up to your success. You are a better person than I, but maybe that's my role in the scheme of it all. Goodnight and God Bless you all!!

I'm trying to get my head around everything you've just presented, which is why this post will be short and sweet-because I'm still chewing and trying to digest! Perhaps others are feeling the same way too, but I just hate swing a discussion post sit on the board with a zero in the reply column.
You sound like a very intelligent guy, and articulate. I had to reference my online dictionary a few times to ensure I was not losing the meaning of your thoughts. Not trying to be sarcastic, I am being humbly honest.
So here's my simple question to you. What will you do, what can you do, what shall you do to get a grip on this progressively destructive disease that is choking the life out of you? That's what you have to to start mapping out. And cross out suicide, as one of those options, as that is a permanent solution to a problem that can be arrested if you have the desire.
I'm going to ponder more of your post and perhaps respond later on. In the meantime, I 'll pass the baton off to one of my team mates in this marathon race for a meaningful life. Maybe they can shed a different perspective that will help you sort through the choices you have before you.
I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

So now what? I am going to try the " wear a rubberband on my wrist" to help focus on this goal of abstinence. I've never done that. I know from previous meetings the focus is Day by Day but for me I have to try to expand that a bit.. end of summer, etc. Then the challenge is not to "reward" myself with a night of gambling. I have to have faith that if I can contain this that each new day will be a little easier for me to not go back. My hope is that it's not too late for me to save and get ahead. Initially I left one job to take another for the sole purpose of tapping into my 401K. I had shamefully taken money out of my kids savings account. I have replaced these funds and I have never tried to access their money again. That might be the most shameful thing I've ever done and I'll never forgive myself. That was in 2009 and I was able to replenish it in 2010 with more but the shame is unbearable. But it took less than a year for blackjack to deplete the rest. Of course I owe the IRS.. Anyway I got side-tracked. My day-to-day goal is to visit here as daily. My short-term goal is too see if I can actually go "gamble free" after I get my next paycheck until I am issued another one 2 weeks after that. Perhaps I should look into finding another therapist, but this is costly given its an out of pocket expense or we have to pay 70%. I'm sorry I got wordy again.
Lastly, I feel ashamed and selfish coming here because I know ther are people here who have experienced far worse and struggle with so much more. I am ashamed for feeling sorry for myself when I am the direct cause of my problems. Especially when I face my daughter who was born Autistic and did nothing to have that happen to her other than being born. All my wounds are self-inflicted and the impact my poor decisions have caused has affected my family in it's wake. I'm solely responsible and I pray I have he courage and tenacity to do the things hat will help me stop. The fact that you all have taken the time to respond really means a lot. You are all wonderful people and I don't deserve the time you've spent praying for me or encouraging me over the past 12 hours. I really want to change and be able to earn the kindness you've shown. I really am a good hearted person and I wasn't raised to lie and steal. It's said that character is how you behave when nobody is watching and character is how you treat people who can do absolutely nothing for you. With regard to the latter I have it but with the former, I am a man of low character. This beast needs caged and hopefully with your help, I can indeed do so. I don't deserve the blessings I have with my kids nor the kindness of the strangers here, but I honestly pray that one day I will. Thank you all and I'll check in later. I'm encouraged and awestruck by the success most of you have shown in defeating this and I truly look up to your determination. I hope I can do the same. 72 hours gamble free!
These feelings are unusual for me, as I am a very optimistic person and usually get busy solving whatever concern I have, seldom having a "pity party." I have been working on not gambling for a year and a half and have been doing fairly well during "normal schedules" i.e. when my husband is home. (However, I've yet to make it two months-have had several "rock bottoms") When he is 200 miles away helping his elderly father, I have gone gambling.
I can't believe I can fail so many times and keep doing the same thing and sending my self esteem down the dumpster.
Thanks so much for sharing, as today I really needed to read your post as I was feeling so alone in my feelings. (Not that I'm glad that you are having these feelings, too; I wouldn't wish them on anyone.)
