If people go into treatment or counseling because their partner is pushing them, they may never feel motivated from the inside. Attempting to make major life changes with the motivation to appease our partners is at best, a temporary fix. Unless the desire for a different life comes from within, a person is likely to feel resentful and as though they are being controlled, manipulated or are powerless over their own life. These kinds of feelings without honest communication become unbearable leaving fight, flight or freeze as the only alternatives perceived as a way out.
I have seen examples of spouses supporting their partners through treatment many times. The treatment program I attended provided couples counseling and education groups for both the addict and the supporting friends and family members. Process groups help both addicts and non addicts to learn to communicate effectively, learn to be mindful of our own feelings, learn to express feelings, desires, needs and learn to set boundaries.
There are so many dynamics at play in relationships it is impossible to speculate why any one person chooses to exit. Our relationships are often like a mirror reflecting the accumulation of all of our experiences, thoughts, fears, dreams, as well as the unresolved blemishes of our early childhood issues.
