Gambling Addiction & Recovery Support Group
Compulsive gambling is an urge or addiction to gamble despite harmful negative consequences or a desire to stop. A preferred term among many professionals is problem gambling, as few people described by the term experience true compulsions in the clinical sense of the word. Problem gambling often is defined by whether harm is experienced by the gambler or others rather...
can do this, don't give up!
I did not think I could quit and contemplated suicide and it still took me another 2 weeks to get quit after getting myself to a counselor and therapy.
I was afraid of therapy, afraid of GA, afraid of living without gambling, afraid to continue what I was doing and afraid to change. Fear all the way. I dreaded GA and group therapy to begin with, but made myself go because the only other way out I could see was suicide and I am not sure that is really a way out. I made the decision to LIVE and live better than I ever have, to love, to engage in my community to take care of myself. I run to my support group now.
Everyone over 21 is responsible for themselves. Your daughter got a gambling problem because of her own choices and behavior not because of you, even if you introduced her to gambling. She is a big girl and unless you tied her to a machine and forced her to play at gunpoint, what she has done is HER doing not yours. You have enough to worry about with yourself without taking on the problems of others. She may be a good partner to quit with if she is in that frame of mind. If she is not interested in quitting her own compulsive gambling you may need to keep some distance between you while you get through the early part of withdrawal. You may want to start with baby steps, the Wednesday night phone in GA meeting is a good start, but you will have the opportunity to gain much more, more quickly, by going to a face to face GA group. Seek out some counseling, public mental health, private counselor, even clergy if you are so inclined.
Do something about protecting your money from yourself.
You can quit this nasty addiction, it takes accepting that you are powerless over gambling to start with and then a concentrated effort on a daily basis.
I have been going to meetings and still I was going. I know I needed to be there, yet, my compulsive obsession drove me to the casino. Yes, it is close - but closer yet if this computer (and sometimes phone). I am at the point that I have hit bottom, then proceeded into the cellar. There is always further to fall. Let's you and I tackle this with the help of these fine folks on DS. We can do it! Hugs! ~atticus
