I have admitted being a habitual player, but not to being an addicted gambler. I reached the point it had to stop, and only one month away from financial recovery. It was not hard to do. I do not miss it at all.

This person was quite over the line. Hopefully, this will not effect your relationship with IRS and ideally, you can have an honest conversation with this person about that can't happen again.
With such poor boundaries, this person would not be one that I would choose to depend on or hang out with.
There are a couple of silver linings, 1)you found out quick about this person. 2) You have an opportunity to look back to see if there were some other clues that you overlooked about this person that could help you next time you choose someone to trust.
