When you first quit gambling, even the first day, you feel ancy.... itchy...and uncomfortable. you feel like you have no time, or too much time. like you have to do something.... and nothing seems enough.
you no longer enjoy things you used to before you gambled. whether it be playing pool, hanging out with friends, or watching movies. its hard to just relax. relaxing to us has become something we do, or tell people we are doing, when we stay home cause we lost all our money and need a "day off" cause of how bad we are feeling.
FORCE yourself to do something active... pottery... video games... daily strength lol.... you may become and internet junkie for a while.... just keep doing something. do something with your hands.
SLEEP all you can. call people. anything. if you have to hermit and stay inside then do so. just do anything to keep you away from the casino. go out to eat, eat an expensive dinner, buy yourself some clothes....
something other than spending money in a casino. even if it seems you spent too much money on dinner,
its better than what you would spend in a casino. even if your bills are still behind... if you think about all you have to pay as far as bills go all at once, it will drive you back to the casino. it will be too much. dont be afraid to pamper yourself for a minute... because you are worth it. forgive yourself and celebrate not going to the casino today. and as you get more in control of your recovery, you automatically start looking at what you need to do to fix your life, and things come to you, one at a time. dont allow yourself to get overwhelmed.

Thanks, Dracona... I agreed with everything you wrote...do whatever it takes to stay away from that first bet. Whatever it takes! Do not gamble no matter what. In the beginning of recovery it is tough, I forgot how to relax, you're right about that. Relaxing is for lazy people, I thought...relaxing is selfish, I thought...how can others relax when I can't, I thought...that's just not fair, I thought...ALL CRAZY THOUGHTS of a crazy, compulsive gambler! In many ways I resented the fact that other people seemed to enjoy things I considered a waste of time...one of them being hanging out on the computer...ha, ha, ha...just look at me now :p I love my computer time in the morning!
