Unlawful pertains to things like stealing. Illegal pertains to items like drugs and prostitution. OR, they are one and the same.

I'll take a shot at this Gene..
illegal means it is not permitted by law, unlawful means not following the law. same thing.

However illegal can be used not only for laws. For ex, rules. Like an illegal pass in football is against the rules but not against political laws. UNLAWFUL however isn't really used in other forms other than being against gov't laws.

Both of them mean DON'T Do IT!

According to the Random House Pocket Dictionary ~ 'Unlawful means against the law. Illegal means against official rules or laws' ... Why?
