belovedfaith
Met him for coffee Saturday.
10 years my senior
all grown up, hopes me...
Needing a friend.
How long since I "dated?"
At first glance .. and first "hello"
There was less air to breathe...
Was it his crack "Are you wearing gingham?"
"Cotton, I think" ..
From Boston Proper . no less.
No warm compliment .. rather snide instead.
Where are you from, asks he.
"California."
He derides the character of any woman from California.
He met the mother of his only child, a son .. at the Ritz ..
chosen for her beauty to father his children
But she chose the time .. and went off the pill
Thus, she lost his heart .. and never wore his ring.
Angry, he married someone else who gave him the tingles.
But she loved him not.
Hmmm. Wonder why?
"Why didn't you remarry", pries he.
The strain of divided loyalties, says I..
(Some demand much, deliver little.)
He barks that's the why it must be..
HE MUST COME FIRST - like duh!
And no man loves another man's children .. like his own.
So what happens when he LEAVES?
When there are no more "tingles."
Just wondering...
I order oatmeal .. easy to eat.
He copies me.
I sprinkle salt on mine .. to his obvious disgust ..
telling me it already has enough salt.
"Not for me, it doesn't," I remark .. shaking away.
To break his relentless stare,
I suggested a walk (hoping to relax a little).
No, says he .. already had his exercise for the day.
He brags about meeting a famous black athlete ...
and treated him like anyone else. "Some blacks are as good as we are."
"Really" I inquire .. going for a neutral tone.
I show him a photo of my stunning granddaughter
When he says how lovely she is ..
I add .. "and she, too is black..."
He mumbles something about being just a little black.
I tell him, rather stiffly .. that I am proud of her heritage
He was a pilot until his open heart surgery 4 years back.
Tells me all about flying in nitty gritty detail.
All about his volunteer work f how he is such the giver.
How they need the benefit of his expertise.
What to do next time?
Simply say so .. and leave.
Something like ... "This isn't working for me. Goodbye."

Good writing. :)
beloved, you have a real gift with words - exquisite, full of meaning, rivetting. I can find the words to describe it!! Seriously.
starfish, I'm so glad you mentioned your relationship. I haven't been in a proper relationship for 15 years (lots of disgusting drunken sex until I got sober 11 years ago - sorry guys if that's too much information). I feel that it would be impossible for me to have a go at a relationship. I never met a man in my adult life that I went out with that I hadn't met drunk. So, yes, it is scarey, but you inspire me.
