Sometimes I wonder
How did I come to be here?
A girl of 8 born into a traveling family moved to Texas
3 years later she moved to California
She moved many more times but never even visited Texas
She grew up and had a son when she was 21
He is now grown and moved to Texas
In that same part of Texas
For a job
I'm visiting, I'm here again
Standing under a sky in Texas
Remembering in my body how it felt to live here
Bittersweetness is the feeling now
A storm is blowing in
I recall a day just like this one
A deep love for this country rests inside
Somewhere, a memory
A lot has changed
Not for the better
Where are the horned lizards, the box turtles?
They lived plentiful everywhere when I was 8
But the storms blow in just as before
The wind howls
And the stars shine
A cotton tail rabbit looks much smaller
Standing out in the street in the night
I feel in my body the memory of a girl and a place changed but
A day like today
