Foster Care Support Group

Foster care is a system by which a certified, stand-in parent(s) cares for minor children or young peoples who have been removed from their birth parents or other custodial adults by state authority. Responsibility for the young person is assumed by the relevant governmental authority and a placement with another family found.

I just wanna hear experiences good bad from foster kids, parents, foster parents....could i go to foster care at 17? is it as bad as the movies portray? How it is like? If im a junior in foster care will i still be moving alot?

I'm a foster parent...I don't know what your situation is but @ 17 you can still go into foster care....I can only speak for myself and the stories I have heard from my foster kids...what kind of foster home depends on the parents some can be as the movies portray from what I hear...others like my home are more sincere and there for the soul purpose of helping the children....the amount of moving depends on YOU!! If you are a good kid, do as your parents tell you, and the foster parents are good to you...you could stay there indefiantely...if you and the foster parents clash you could be moved...stay in touch with your caseworker and be honest, tell them your real needs and don't act out just to get moved...Hope this helps you...keep me posted as to what is going on in your life...jeanshope

i have another question will i be able to continue in therapy in foster care? i cnt live in this house anymore....i cry everyday here and i feel like im a prison...this house is full of crzy people my dad and step mom ....i just cnt anymore i know i have a yr left but its too much....my recent journal explains it

If your in therapy you can still go chances are child welfare will make sure you keep going as its something you need. You cant jsut call up and ask to go into foster care though. Child welfares goal is and always will be to get children back with their parents. I am not sure what your reasons for not wanting to leave your home are but with out abuse, neglect, or such issues you are not going to be able to go into foster care.

i was in therapy and my dad ripped me out of it because he thought i was talking about him but i wasnt suppose to leave yet.....i dont get hit any more but home is scary.....its in my journal if u wanna see it

For me and we can only speak from our own experiences; as a foster teenager, I was most comfortable in a girls group home. There I was able to find other teenage girls who understood and could relate to my emotional plight.

In the group home, I had structure, there was rules, guidelines and security. Most of all was the opportunties afforded to transition from foster care to independence, and not having to worry about whether I would have a place to live when I became 18 years old.
