Food Addiction Support Group
An individual suffering from a food addiction disorder frequently experiences episodes of uncontrolled eating, or binging, during which they may feel frenzied or out of control. They will eat much more quickly than is normal, and continue to eat even past the point of being uncomfortably full. Binging in this way is generally followed by a period of intense guilt feelings...
Well, you have that now. Welcome to the group no one wants to join, because who wants to have a food addiction? But if you need it, this can be a valuable place. There is not a lot of traffic here. I post ridiculous amounts of words on one thread, and people show up and introduce themselves and then mostly stay quiet. But I've managed to convince myself that there's a huge army of support here anyway, and by doing so, this has become a helpful place for me. I hope it will be for you as well.
Coffee was a bad things for me for a long time. I remember teaching in a Catholic high school and telling my students I was giving up coffee for Lent. (I almost always had a mug nearby.) On the third day, the kids in my music theory class came in with a large fresh coffee and handed it to me and said "We really don't think we should have to suffer for your spiritual growth." Bam.
I've managed to come to terms with coffee, but it was hard work, and anyone who dismisses your concern is not acting in your best interest. The thing with coffee is that it easily becomes a vehicle for sugar and cream, and it's so natural to pair it with something else to eat, and so on.
And look, it doesn't matter what the substance is - if it controls you instead of vice versa, then yes, there's a problem you need to solve. That's the focus of this group, and it doesn't, or shouldn't, matter whether it's sugar or pizza or whatever. If you know you aren't in control, then it's in the territory of addiction, and that's not a good place to be.
Tell us more about you. Why are you quitting entirely - do you need to do so for medical reasons? Or is this something that you can possibly learn to enjoy in moderation?
This is something I am struggling with too. What makes it worse is I'm hooked on expensive coffee from coffee shops. Can you tell me if there's been anything that has possibly helped you cut back?
