Food Addiction Support Group
An individual suffering from a food addiction disorder frequently experiences episodes of uncontrolled eating, or binging, during which they may feel frenzied or out of control. They will eat much more quickly than is normal, and continue to eat even past the point of being uncomfortably full. Binging in this way is generally followed by a period of intense guilt feelings...
Society views being obese/overweight which is often the result of food addiction as a weakness on the part of the person, not a valid disease.
I agree with you, the scientific community still needs to catch up with this addiction and recognize it as one.
This is not a joke, overeating sugar and flour will kill you sooner rather than later. I hear over and over again from members of Food Addicts Anonymous how once they stopped the sugar and flour they were able to go off their medications for diabetes and high blood pressure, how much better they sleep now, and how incredible they feel.
When we are told in the midst of our addiction to just eat less by people who do not have the disease of sugar and flour addiction, it is a ridiculous piece of advice. Yet it's advocated in every diet plan out there: Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem, etc. It is no wonder that the majority who follow those plans can't keep the weight off.
Just eat less. How in the world can we eat less, when the fact is that sugar and flour is biochemically pushing us to eat more and more? We are compelled because there are receptors in our brains that send out signals demanding that we eat more foods that contain flour and sugar. It's a vicious circle. The only way to stop it is to find a way of eating that eliminates these two addictive substances, and instead eat a healthy balance of proteins, fats, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains (Not flours).
I would really like to tell my sister. I'm not sure how she will react to it as she is skinny and always has been. She is also mildly obsessed with being thin and always complaining that she is not thin enough. As you can imagine that always makes me feel bad about myself. Even at my thinnest I was still the fat one compared to her. In my mind I am always the fat one. I think this is my biggest obstacle in my head to overcome.
I am at a point where I am okay with being a size 12. I of course don't want to be any bigger. But everytime I get to see my sister who I love very much (besides my weight/self-esteem she is my best friend) I get stressed/depressed/anxious. That is my problem though. I need to get over it and enjoy our time together without it hanging over my head.
