Last Sat night, 6 pm the library closes and I head to the local Taco Bell. I get my order and walk out. Fairly well casual dressed guy hits on me for money to eat. I offer to buy him what he wants inside. He says "I just want to have spare change" I then say "You're an effing liar asking for food money then"...He just walks away.

This angers me so badly. People having a hard time making ends meet and this DB who has good clothing is begging for no dicernable reason.

I am sure glad I can afford to call their bluffs if people ask me for food money. But still, has it come to this? People who can work would rather shelve their pride at being a working person paying their bills and providing for themselves and instead, begging.

I can't fathom lowering myself to do that, I'd rather work and be happy putting in my time at a job. I'll soon be in a better mood, but just cannot believe people are doing this.

If the money is not for food then it's probably for drugs. I saw a program on it. There was some guy in Vegas who was a war veteran with a heroin addiction who spends a large part of his day panhandling. Another guy finds food discarded in trashcans and on sidewalks. He eats that and begs for money for his weekly dose of methamphetamines, I think it was.

Thanks Robotnik, I volunteered for homeless meal serving (My church goes to a local park and feeds a meal to the homeless. I will start helping them and hopefully will come to know these people even better.

But it still grates on me that this person was so uncaring how he looked....No pride, honor or value of self worth.

thank you for sharing your experience it's a fact that people do anything for money but i think there are people who are genuine need but we don't know who is true or lying. I was homeless for nearly two years. I have a lot of respect and empathy for the homeless. The reason for my homelessness was alcoholism. This was back in the 80s. I have been sober for over 23 years. Anyway, the only way I got off the streets was because a man offered me a job and I took it.

Things weren't smooth sailing after that but I never went back to the streets.

The one thing I learned from my experience is to never give a homeless person a penny - NEVER. I panhandled a lot and got a fair amount of money and all of it went to booze. No food, no shelter, just booze. By giving the homeless money you are stopping them from getting help. They won't go to a shelter or go anywhere if they know they can get money.

Give to a charity. After I cleaned up my financial mess ($65K in debt - now debt free for six years) I started giving to The Salvation Army. I give my second hand goods to their stores and financial support throughout the year and I also have adopted a family at Christmas time.

The thing to remember is not all homeless people are pulling a scam. Alcoholism and drug addiction is real and acn't just be stopped with will power. If you can't understand that, then I am happy for you because you do not suffer from these diseases.

Most people in today's world are one paycheck from homelessness. Right now in the UK we are experiencing a nasty cold spell. Five homeless people froze to death last night - they weren't pulling a scam.

Thanks Messenger I do donate to the homeless in the way of soap, clothing, coffee or goodies (Cookies and such) I find that even if I only spend $15-$25 I get a good feeling of being helpful in a small way.

I went 4 week ago with 2 armfuls of items for hygiene and one lady was thrilled for a bottle of dandruff shampoo...That's all she really wanted. That's why I now have a card which allows me to buy in bulk and then donate more to the homeless but through the charity. Never directly....

While I am not addicted to alcohol or drugs, I am addicted to gambling and yes it also can result in homelessness....But God willing I keep away from the machines of destruction.
