Well my possessions are!!! My crate of my "goodies" will be loaded on a freighter sometime this month and start its cruise across the Atlantic.
Got the bill for it today. They had set prices 1-50 cubic feet, then 51-100, then 101-150 and so on.
I really got rid of a load of my possessions and packed everything in boxes and loaded it on a regular wooden pallet. After that I shrink wrapped it and just by looks it was pretty obvious I was over 50 cubic feet... so I re-stacked everything and got it more level and got the bill that showed 49 cubic feet.
I did it. The cheapest price available and I made it by one cubic foot!!! I had money set aside for this and it is paid in full.
Tuesday, I will start the paperwork on filing an insurance claim for being stranded three days in Omaha after one flight was cancelled and the wait to get on a new one. After that is settled, they should reimburse my credit card and whatever is leftover I'll pay in full and my new life in England will begin debt free. And more importantly, my old life in America will end debt free.
I got my permit to work and will start looking, though really I would be quite comfortable to be unemployed till mid-February. With that said, I will be applying for two jobs, both of them I am more then qualified and have over 20 years experience with it. I'm really hoping on the one. Using my baking skills at a small bakery making breads. Kind of a yuppie type place that is a high scale bakery in the morning and early afternoon, then a wine bar restaurant at nights. The other one is a baker making cakes and pies. If I get one that is great, if not I'm still very comfortable with the funds I have saved for the last five years.
Whatever happens I am very confident that I will find a job pretty quick...

Your ability to find work vindicates my belief that Formal Education is a waste of time and money. You found work at a Shop dealing with boxes, when I was an over-entitled Yuppie Student who was all mouth and no trousers.
My Dot-Com-Bubble burst after I graduated and then the symptoms of underearning took over. I thought the world was my oyster and didn't take any action to leave my Cave; i.e. take Driving Lessons, look for rental apartments in Belfast, not even attending to my personal hygiene. :|
I see my Brother work at Marks and Spencer part time and manage to Study Full Time along with it and I am green with envy. But, on reflection, it was me who prompted him to get out of his Fat Couch and do something with his life. So, I can take some credit for that.
My dream is to paddle my own canoe in terms of a career, perhaps Graphic Design is the way forward for me. :)
I do know that the boxes used for the cakes and breads that I did make are not "just boxes." Have you ever seen a box made from scratch? An engineer is the one who creates it... the box has to be just so, the flaps, never touching the product.
Every new box that was created in that bakery took over three months to get approved. And before it was even created the business had to invest $3,500 just to get the ball rolling.
The box business involves not only math but also geometry...
Not everyone can work in a box business...

As far as education, it is entirely up to the recipient with how they use it. I went to a University for two years when I was 18 and 19. I dropped out because I didn't have any money. The first two years were paid for with cash. When the money quit - I quit. At the time I wanted to be a stockbroker.
What I learned has been invaluable. It has helped me set up budgets for work as well as my private life.
I'm not bitter at all with the education I have had... I didn't get a degree but what I learned has helped me more then what I paid for it.
They handle things a bit easier then UPS and I wasn't going to send my desktop on the sea journey. I got advice about the salt air and destroying PC's.
So, only tie left to America is sitting in Charleston waiting to be loaded on a boat...

I think you have many friends in the rooms and on this board that are still in America. I also believe that your service work on this board is invaluable. In my opinion, you will always have a root in America.
Take care of yourself, enjoy full time married life, I hope you find a great job soon as well. See you on the boards.....
