I would say counseling.
Of course I do not know if there are any other difficult factors in your marriage other than this major financial one, but before it is too late I would look into anything that could fix it.
Men often have a hard time expressing how they feel, especially when it comes to not being able to support their family.
Are there other things he does to help?
I am divorced, not due to finances, but I know if I could have saved my marriage I would have.

I agree with igloogirl... counseling is better than arguing out the same arguments over than over with the same results. GL and here if ya ever need to vent.

I would love to go to counseling by myself as we tried the joint counseling and it was a disaster.He was unbending. I cannot afford it right now. Any way to get free counseling? Thanks for the great suggestion. I would love some free individual counseling right now

Maybe I am just not as trusting as others. 2nd marriage here. If I were you I would snoop make sure there are no paycheck stubs, deposit slips, pull his credit report to see if he's opened bank accounts you don't know about, He can file on the doctor for backpay he needs to go to the local employment office and file the claim regardless of the doctor getting sick a judgement can be put on his assets and income tax refunds and any other assets property etc and when these things are sold your husband can be paid. I would consult an attorney in your area and clarify this info. as I am not shy about handing a bill to my husband and telling him you got paid today? Good please give me xxxx amount of dollars to pay this or go pay it and bring me the receipt for our records. Sorry but If you don't or didnt know this man REALLY well before you married I would SERIOUSLY check him out. I did for my second husband and asked him every question I had about his credit report, problems etc. my first marriage ruint my financial situation and I loss my house when he quit paying payments after he got in divorce settlement. First Rule - Always Protect Yourself....make sure you know he is who he says he is, doing what he says he is doing, is where he is suppossed to be when he is suppossed to be there and if there is any doubt in your mind ...unfortunately you are probably right to have that doubt. I'd sit him down spread out all the bills from last year until now, calculate what you've paid, what he didn't make or did, calculate anything he's paid for and even suggest that for now or after the holidays either one or both of you get part-time jobs. I'd even go so far as to type him up a resume and put on monster or careerbuilder.com and get your classified's when you sit down to talk to him.

I'd also open you a seperate bank account in your mother's name, friend's name, sister whoever and put what little bit of money you can every time you get it from pay, bonus whatever you never know you may need this money to take care of you if things don't get better.

Please don't think I am trying to be rude, I'm not I've been where you are but mine was construction worker, turned Engineer after I put him through school while I worked two jobs and went to school too parttime. He got my father's house then it was foreclosed on he stopped paying notes and basically destroyed it down to the bare walls. I lost the house I grew up in, 20+ acres, everything my dad had worked for because he made more money, married my ex-best friend whose daddy could afford a high priced lawyer and I was left with nothing but the will to start over and never again let this happen to me or anyone I knew again!

It sounds like you love your husband but enough is enough he needs to man up and start helping you take care of the bills if he doesn't it's time to move on hon cause if he ain't doing it after5 years he isn't going to!

I have to agree with Reid on this one. While reading your post red flags went up, of course I don't have all the information. Do the snooping. Ask questions. How does a grown man who is able to become a chiropracter (sp?) manage to not get paid for 9 months. It could happen and he might just be so totally embarrassed that he let it happen, but....

Maybe he should go to work for a hospital or clinic until his buiz takes off. He can build clients and then start thinking about running one himself. And you, my dear, need to lear the art of making your husband feel like he's letting you down without him knowing your doing it. It takes some finess but it works. You also might consider a sudden change at work-I dont know why they just are cutting my hours to part time. And if his alternative is to get you a new job, go low paying, I just dont have the skills, maybe I should go to school now. Turn them tables, but do it carefully because if you love him you have got to be gental to his ego while making him want to please you. Nothing says "why am I trying like a pissed off wife at home" Make him the bad guy by being supper pleasant and supportive. It rubs off.
I know its corny but My sister in law (another story) gave me doctor lauras book and it really lets you know how to finess your life. It gives you both sides and how to deal with all kinds of situations including finances and heading for divorce. I relearned alot of stuff I knew and picked up a few new tools. Not a huge fan of Dr. Laura but I liked this book and it was a quick read
